Is Purina Dog Chow healthy? Should I switch to a budget dog food?

Purina ProPlan is just as good as Royal Canin and Science Diet, and the Purina you find in the grocery store is lower quality, but it's still the best of the supermarket brands. Nope, no reason to switch at all! Purina is the best of the supermarket brands, and it's absolutely fine to feed Cletus. I never recommend feeding grain free diets. They are a fad, and it's appearing to be a dangerous fad. Vets are seeing an increase in dogs with dilated cardiomyopathy who are on grain free diets, and the FDA is now investigating that link. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Both foods are good! Personally I would save the novel protein (trout) for animals with GI or skin disease. My only requirements for food brands for my clients are: the dog likes the food and eats it well, has a good coat, defecates normal stool regularly and isn't too thin or overweight. Most of the dog foods on the market are aimed at making the owner happy and use marketing ploys to get owners to feed foods for incorrect reasons (grain free, listing ingredients on the bag in differnet orders making owners think that it is better than another brand). Expensive food doesn't equal better. I like Purina, Royal Canin and Hill's Science diet. I hope this helps!

I would recommend feeding a diet from a company with a good reputation, who employs veterinary nutritionists to help formulate their diets and does AAFCO feeding trials to prove that their diets provide complete and balanced nutrition when fed long-term. Companies that meet these criteria include Iams, Purina, and Royal Canin. Purina Dog Chow Complete Adults would be a very reasonable choice.

I would recommend feeding a mid grade food if possible. Alpo is not my favorite but a reasonable alternative is Purina. It is more affordable than taste of the wild. If your dog is doing well you don’t need to change the food but there are healither alternatives.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Max. Higher quality food does make a difference in a dog, but you could see how he does on economical brand. You want him to eat the food and like it. He should have no vomiting or diarrhea on a new diet and should only have 2-3 bowel movements per day. He also needs to have a glossy coat. These are signs the diet is working for him. Of the cheaper brands, I would recommend Purina Dog Chow or Pedigree. Purina ProPlan and Iams will better options of the higher ends foods you listed. I hope this information helps!

I love Chow Chows! I have a red female Chow Chow who is almost 10 years old, and she is just the best dog. No, it's not true that Chow Chow's diets should be cut down on meat. I personally feed my Chow Iams dog food, and she does great on it. There could be a couple of reasons why Heisenberg is reluctant to eat. He could have a dental problem that is making it painful for him to eat, or it could be he is suffering from a medical illness causing a decrease in appetite. Due to this, I would have him checked out by a vet in the next couple of days. just to make sure everything is ok health wise with him. If he is healthy, then it may simply be that he doesn't like the flavor of food you are feeding. Royal Canin is an excellent brand of food, and he is close to needing to be fed an adult food. You could try switching his food to Royal Canin medium breed adult food, or using another brand such as Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. If you do switch his food brand, do it slowly to avoid any GI upset. I hope this helps!
