Is my dog's Pure Balance and Purina One food mix healthy and safe?

I personally am not a fan of dog foods that are grain free or with lentils in them. New research has come out showing that in certain breeds of dogs, diets with lentils in them prevented taurine absorption. This has lead to diet-induced (taurine deficiency) dilated cardiomyopathy in the future for those dogs. In addition, grains are truly beneficial to dogs and provide a source of fiber and lasting energy. The truth is that a grain allergy is actually very rare in dogs. Of all of the dogs who have allergies, the most common allergy is environment. Only 10% of dogs with allergies have food related allergies, and the majority of those are protein related. I only recommend grain free diets if the dog has a diagnostically proven grain allergy. If you don't like Science Diet or Royal Canin, certainly I won't recommend them, but I do like Purina ProPlan and Iams. I feel my own dogs Iams, and they do great on it. I would recommend one of those food for them. I hope this helps.

Hello. There is absolutely nothing wrong with feeding Purina Dog Chow if your dog is doing well on it. Just because it does not have a fancy name does not make it a bad food & some of the really pricy brands are pretty crappy. Purina, along with Hill's & Royal Canin, are the most respected dog food manufacturers. These companies employ veterinary nutritionists to formulate & test their products on real dogs & this means more to veterinarians than any formula just based on laboratory data. Hi, thanks for using Petcoach! I just ask my clients to check for the AAFCO nutritional statement on any food brand they purchase. If the pet eats the food well, is appropriate body weight, doesn't have vomiting or diarrhea then I am happy. Between these 2 brands you will get different answers and reasons probably from every Vet or pet owner you ask. I have clients on both that are happy. The reason is that most dogs are very sensitive to diet changes and it is best to stick with one good high quality balanced diet longterm instead of switching them frequently. Some examples of high quality balanced diets include Purina Pro Plan and Science Diet foods. Once you are feeding a balanced and complete diet, there is no need to add other ones or switching them. This will avoid the gastrointestinal issues that would come with changing diets on a regular basis. Good luck and have a great day!

There are many types out there that are affordable and good. I like the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends in that category because they are palatable, affordable and of very good quality. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center! I personally like the Purina Pro Plan diets as well as the Hill's Science Diet foods as I think they are both palatable and highly nutritious. In terms of treats, I think the milk bones products are both nutritious, palatable and reasonably priced. Good luck and best wishes!

I usually recommend feeding a high quality diet. Purina is an excellent diet but if you do not have access to this diet, there are others that you could consider that are also excellent such as Hill's Science Diet, Royal canin and Iams foods. Grain does not necessarily make dogs gain weight so I would be more focused on the quality and balance of the diet per se. Good luck and have a great day!
