My puppy's yellow tooth bleeds when brushed. Should I see a vet?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to tell from the pictures but it looks like Ginger may have broken her tooth. I recommend making an appointment with your vet when they open to take a look at it. Though she isn’t acting painful, it may become painful or infected. There isn’t anything you can do at home and no safe medications you can give for pain. If it is broken, she will likely need to undergo anesthesia to have the tooth removed. The vet that looks at it will be able to help more once a diagnosis is made. Good luck and kisses to Ginger!

Great job brushing Luca’s teeth!! Brushing regularly makes such a difference in oral heath long term! I would not be worried about a small amount of blood on the brush at all! We often see this if the gums are a little inflamed, either from a little gingivitis or from teething in a puppy. You can use a wet, soft cloth to wipe the area that bled a little if there is still blood on the teeth. Make sure you are using a very soft bristled, small toothbrush. Wet the brush before using, and apply a pea sized amount of toothpaste. If you are just starting to brush, you may even want to just use your finger with veterinary tooth paste on it and rub it on teeth and gums for a week or so to start, then work up to the toothbrush. That sounds and looks like like potential gum disease and tartar/plaque build up on the teeth. Often when it's to this point, a dental cleaning is needed to remove the build up and make sure the teeth are healthy. I would have Ghost examined by your vet and get him scheduled for a dental.

I recommend that you have Luna evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to look at this closely and decide what would be best. Poor Minnie. The black tooth is likely infected and the red gums indicate periodontal disease. She needs to go to your vet for a mouth exam and likely will need to have this area cleaned well and potentially have to have the tooth extracted. The vet may recommend dental x-rays for optimal care. Until you can get her in you can rinse her mouth with pet formulated mouth wash to help with the odor and cut down in the infection. Hello, congratulations on your new pup. He may indeed require that this tartar be removed with scaling as it may have a thick plaque that is tightly adhere to the enamel and unlikely to come off with brushing. This will also allow your veterinarian to examine Bernie and become acquainted with him. They will then be able to determine if a cleaning procedure is necessary or if he could benefit from dental chews/other hygiene approaches to remove this thick tartar. It may indeed have been compromised while chewing. It may heal on it's own or not. You would need to have Frankie seen by your veterinarian. A dental x-ray may be recommended to further assess the tooth. If it has been damaged, it may need to be extracted.
