My puppy has worms in her poop. Is she too young for treatment?

Great question! I personally like Panacur. It's an excellent dewormer that you can get OTC. It's a three day course of treatment, and Bella will need another course of treatment two weeks after the first to kill all the worms. She should then be dewormed monthly until she is six months old, and should be dewormed every three months thereafter. I hope this helps!

Aurora-what a lovely name! I bet she's a cute little thing :) We typically recommend repeating deworming treatment every 3 weeks (21 days) in young pups as the deworming medication only acts on certain life-stages of the worms living inside the dog. If Aurora has a heavy worm burden inside you can expect to see some dead/almost dead worms passing in her stool-this is normal. If Aurora continues to have diarrhea a checkup with your regular vet would be recommended. Whilst internal parasites can be a common cause of soft stool in young dogs there can be a myriad of other possible causes, including coccida, parvo virus and inappropriate diet.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Puppies should be dewormed every 2 weeks from 2 weeks of age to about 10 weeks of age. She can still have worms. But in general puppies of Bella's age tend to have fat little distended bellies, just like human babies, which is very normal. They tend to look even fuller after eating. It is time to start her vaccinations so the Vet can also feel her belly to be sure everything is fine. I wish Bella the best!

Tapeworms are typically associated with fleas. There are over the counter deworming medications that can be used for tapeworms but if the fleas are not addressed as well the tapeworms will return. With a puppy that young most topical flea treatments are not appropriate but bathing with Dawn dish soap may help remove the fleas on your puppy currently.

Poor Luna! There are many different parasites that she could have been passing in her stool -- roundworms, hookworms, or tapeworms. She most likely acquired parasites from her mother either through the placenta or milk. Pyrantel pamoate is a common dewormer used to treat both roundworms and hookworms, but it is not typically started until 2 weeks of age. However, this medication is extremely safe and may be used off-label prior to 2 weeks of age. Ideally, I do recommend taking Luna to a vet to first determine the type of parasite present, and then determine the best treatment for her. It is important to note that not every dewormer treats every type of parasite. I hope this helps and that all goes well for Luna!

Pets are vaccinated as early as 6 weeks of age, and are usually weaned off of mom at this age. Since you have another pet in the home that does go outside, it is best to start vaccines for this pup once she is 6-8 weeks of age. Intestinal worms usually don't make pets too sick, but it can cause loose stool and potential vomiting. They still will eat well and do well as long as the worms are treated in a timely fashion (within 1-2 weeks), so this is an easy fix if you do encounter this. If your other pet is on a monthly heartworm prevention, then it has a natural intestinal dewormer in it as well that can protect your pet against 2 types of worms (hookworms and roundworms), which are the most common types of worms seen in puppies. But again, if you do happen to encounter a worm problem, this is easily dealt with with the appropriate dewormer, so keep an eye out for any loose stools. Drontal is licensed for puppies at her age and you can get it over-the-counter from local vets, pet shops or online. Please, remember to repeat the treatment in two weeks time.
