My puppy woke up sluggish, disoriented, and wobbly. What's wrong?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. I would give a little Karo syrup on her gums and see if she will eat some dog food for you. See how she is after this. With her being so small, her blood sugar could be having difficulties regulating, especially if she is a picky eater or doesn't eat that much. I would recommend having a veterinarian examine her now as well and see if there is anything else underlying predisposing her to these episodes. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. So, potential serious concerns would be 1. poisoning (ie antifreeze, pot, chemicals, rotten carcasses, etc.) 2. seizures (dogs get epilepsy and it commonly presents in puppies 3. metabolic issue like a liver shunt can cause neurologic symptoms 4. trauma to the brain like being hit by a car. Any neurologic symptoms are very serious and I would take him to an emergency veterinarian for a full workup.

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jace. I am concerned that he was experiencing an episode of low blood sugar. It is common in puppies as small as he is. If he is still acting so lethargic, I would recommend putting karo syrup (or maple syrup or honey) on his gums and he will need to see an emergency veterinarian. If he is back to normal now, monitor him closely and apply the syrup if you ever notice these signs in him again. Provide kibble for him at all times so that he never goes long between meals. Of course, something else could be wrong that your veterinarian could determine based in his exam. I hope this information helps!

Puppies can experience low blood sugar which will make them weak and wobbly. If he felt better after eating, then this could be the case. If this is not the case, then an intoxication is a possibility. Did he eat anything that he shouldn't have recently? Either way, it is good to have him evaluated. I hope this information helps!

Wobbler's to show up at this age and in this breed is pretty rare. She may be hypoglycemic which is causing the wobbling. You can give her a 1/4 teaspoon of Karo syrup or honey to bring her sugar up. If she doesn't perk up after about 10-15 minutes then she needs to see your vet.

She could be hypoglycemic. Small breed dogs should eat more frequent, smaller meals throughout the day as to not let their blood sugar drop. I suggest you do this and if she is still not acting normally she should see a vet.

Sometimes small breed puppies can have hypoglycemic episodes. Because of this its important to feed them multiple snacks throughout the day. I recommend taking Koko to see her veterinarian soon just to make sure that there is nothing that requires medical treatment.
