My puppy is vomiting and stomach looks caved in. Should I go to vet?

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 5 days old | 20 lbs

My 3 month old pitbull Zeus has been vomiting all morning. I think it could be something he got ahold of or ate but I'm not sure. His stomach seems a bit caved in too. When should I seek vet help

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Zeus!

Since he is so young and has been vomiting all morning I would make an appointment for today. WE do not like babies getting dehydrated and if they can't eat they can get low blood sugar.

Causes of vomiting in puppies are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo) and bacterial infections, ate something gross, foreign body causing a blockage, toxin ingestion, reaction to new food/treat/table food, food allergy or intolerance.

I wish Zeus a speedy recovery!

I’m sorry to hear about Zeus. I am very concerned about him and he needs a vet as soon as possible.

He is probably extremely dehydrated by now and may even be heading toward shock. I am extremely concerned for an intestinal blockage or parvo virus.

Regardless of cause, Zeus desperately needs some fluids- probably IV- and anti nausea medication. I do not recommend anything by mouth because he will probably just vomit it up and I cannot be sure that he is swallowing properly.

In short, at this point, there is nothing you can do for Zeus other than take him to a vet immediatley.

Many places will work with care credit ( carecredit.com ) If money is an issue.

Zues needs to see the veterinarian quickly. Weakness to the point of not caring if he is excreting on himself is a sign of serious illness. Just like people, there are many conditions that can make pets feel sick. This could range from a serious infection to intestinal blockage. Also like us, diseases are best addressed early and this may result in a better prognosis. Zeus needs appropriate medical care today. The doctor will need to learn the underlying cause in order to give appropriate treatment. Bring in a stool sample in case the doctor needs to test it. Best of luck.

Puppies do tend to sleep a lot more than adult dogs, so this is probably normal. The soft stools could be caused by food intolerance, food allergies, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, bacterial or viral infection, stress colitis, among others. I would recommend that you have Zeus dewormed in case this is caused by intestinal parasites. A common cause for vomiting in puppies is overeating or eating too fast. You may need to divide up Zeus's daily feeding amount into 4 meals that he eats every 6 hours. The bag of food will have feeding guidelines on the back or side that will tell you how much he should eat each day based on either his current weight or his expected adult weight. If you do this and Zeus is still vomiting, or if he is not interested in food, I recommend that Zeus be checked out by a vet ASAP.

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is possible that Ciroc ate a little too quickly or greedily, causing her to vomit. However, in puppies, vomiting can be caused by parasites and dangerous viral infections. I recommend keeping an eye on Ciroc for continued vomiting, loss of energy/appetite, and diarrhea. If any of these signs occur, she should be seen by a vet ass soon as possible. I hope this helps and that all is well!

My puppy is throwing up foam every few minutes. What should I do?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Vomiting this frequently can be either due to something stuck in the GI tract, or a severe gastritis (inflammation of the GI tract) that can be caused by an infection such a parvo-virus or food poisoning, or just a stomach upset. If Zao hasn't stopped vomiting and isn't eating/drinking well, then I would recommend taking him to the vet. They will likely want to do x-rays to make sure nothing is blocking the GI tract if he is continuing to vomit. Otherwise they can get him medications to make him not throw up. Best of luck with Zao.

Why does my dog have a runny tummy? Is it serious and needs a vet?

It could be that Zuess ate something rotten, has a GI illness, or a foreign body causing this runny tummy. It could also be that he has intestinal worms or something very serious such as parvovirus. Parvo is a too often fatal infection of young, unvaccinated puppies. Given I don't know his vaccination status and the fact that diarrhea can be very serious in puppies, the best thing to do is have him seen by a vet now. The vet can diagnose what is causing his diarrhea, and how best to treat it. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bagel (GREAT name for a beagle!)! Since he is just 6 weeks old it is best to have a Vet take a look at him. When they are this young I worry about dehydration and low blood sugar. They can also deteriorate quickly. Causes of vomiting are: viral infections like parvovirus, intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), foreign body (something is stuck), food allergy or sensitivity. Your Vet may want you to bring a stool sample so they can check it for parasites, they may want to test for parvovirus and take X-rays of his belly. My 6-week-old puppy is vomiting and not eating, what are next steps?

I hate to hear that Xenia is not feeling well. As I am sure the vet told you today, there are many things that can cause the signs. Parasites, bacterial over growth, viral infections, eating something she should not have, organ disease...these are just a few things. Without any further details, it’s hard to say but most vets will test for parasites and parvo virus and go from there. Parvo virus is a big concern as it can be fatal. Being a puppy, there are concerns with low blood sugar occurring if she is not eating. Signs of low blood sugar are disorientation, trouble walking or seizures. If you see any of the signs, this is an emergency and she needs to go to the veterinarian immediately. Try to offer her canned puppy food, boiled white meat chicken and boiled white rice and even babyfood (check the ingredients to make sure there is no onions or garlic, grapes or raisins as these are toxic to dogs). There is also a special canned food made by Royal Canin called Recovery formula and many pets like it. If she is still sick tomorrow, I would recommend to have her re-evaluated by the veterinarian and pursue further diagnostics and treatment. My 4-month-old puppy is sick, not eating, vomiting, diarrhea

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to hear that Gus is not feeling well. Vomiting, diarrhea and lethargy are quite concerning in any dog, especially puppies because of the diseases they can get such as parvovirus. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. They would be able to check for this disease as well as checking for other possibilities such as intestinal worms or other infections. The sooner these diseases are diagnosed the better the outcome tends to be. At the very least, Gus can be started on anti-nausea and anti-diarrhea medications and his hydration status can be checked.
