Can my puppy get his vaccine if he has watery stool but is active?

I hate t hear Max is having this issue. Most puppies with Giardia are fine to vaccinate as long as they are not lethargic, not eating well, vomiting or have severe diarrhea. Mild, non-bloody loose stool in a puppy who is active and eating well can generally be vaccinated (though you may space them out to be more safe). Also, giardia testing needs to be done 4-6 weeks after treatment to be sure the parasite is gone. Some pets will need a combination of medication to kill the parasite. Make sure to check with Max's vet to make sure it is ok to vaccinate him and to make sure Max is getting the correct medication. Take a stool sample in to your vet to be examined. If he is acting normally, playful, eating, has good energy, etc, I don't think you need to be too concerned, but do take him in and bring a stool sample with you. Your vet may recommend deworming him if it hasn't been done within the last 2 weeks. I doubt its related to his vaccines. Vaccine reactions typically occur within hours of the vaccine being given, and it sounds like there was enough of a delay that its not likely the cause. In terms of you "felt something," when your hand was on his stomach, I suspect you were feeling gas moving through the GI tract, which is normal. Most over the counter dewormer will not treat coccidia or giardia which can cause foul, loose stools. There are some malabsorption disorders or inflammatory diseases that can also do this. In many cases anti-diarrheal medications can make things worse by slowing down the GI tract but not treating the underlying problem.

I'm sorry that Jorkey is having diarrhea. It is unlikely that the diarrhea is related to getting the vaccines. It is possible it is due to intestinal parasites or even the de-worming medication, if he received that on Saturday. Stress can also cause diarrhea, so if he was anxious or stressed about the visit, that could have contributed. I would recommend you take him back to your vet to have his diarrhea evaluated. He may need a temporary diet change, probiotics, and potentially an anti-inflammatory medication for his colon. He also may need to be checked for intestinal parasites and be de-wormed with a different medication. I hope he is feeling better very soon!

If he's acting normal otherwise (eating and drinking fine, no vomiting, etc.),. then it should be okay to just monitor for now. If it doesn't resolve in the next 2-3 days, or if he develops any other symptoms such as vomiting or not wanting to eat, then I would recommend having him checked by your vet to make sure nothing else is wrong.

Puppies commonly get gastrointestinal infections from parasites and bacteria that can cause this to happen. We always worry about Parvo virus in puppies, but it causes bloody stool, so hopefully this won't be the case for Stella. If he is still active and eating/drinking, then this is likely not an emergency, but he should be seen by a vet within the next 24 hours.
