My puppy got an unmixed parvo vaccine. Is it safe and effective?

It would be safer to give Mocha another dose of parvo vaccine, about 3-4 weeks after the one she just had. That will make sure that she is fully protected and she is not any danger for the new puppy.

If most of the vaccine got under the skin, it will still be effective, assuming it has been shipped, handled, and reconstituted properly. Because they can be finicky vaccines, I always recommend having your vet vaccinate. Of course if you choose to vaccinate your pet yourself, follow the reconstitution and handling instructions exactly. Temperature, and using the vaccine right away is crucial. Also know that vaccine makers will pay for parvo treatment if your pet has been vaccinated by a veterinarian at the proper intervals. Of course, no matter how you choose to vaccinate Cookie, be sure that she stays away from dog parks, pet stores, and anywhere else that other dogs are frequently found. In fact if you can keep her in a back yard or using the same little area to urinate/defecate that is best. I recommend this for all pups until they are fully vaccinated. Don't worry. Schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam and vaccines. Or you can go to the next scheduled vaccine clinic at the nearby Petco. Khloe will likely need 2-3 boosters given 4 weeks apart. Afterwards, the vaccine will be given yearly. There is very little chance she will contract parvovirus from the vaccine itself. She will be protected and if she is kept away from other dogs, it's not likely she will bring anything back to the home that could infected the puppy. I hope this helps!

Vaccines require the immune system of the vaccinated patient to mount a response which may take a few weeks. By that time, parvovirus is unlikely to be in your pup's system. The best thing would be to separate them for at least 3 weeks until everything clears on your pup and make sure your German Shepherd does not have contact with your pup. Best of luck!

Most adult dogs that were appropriately vaccinated against parvo as puppies - meaning 3 different vaccinations, given no earlier than 8 weeks of age and proceeding at 3 - 4 week intervals - are protected against contracting parvovirus, as long as they receive booster vaccinations as recommended. Typically, the recommendation is one vaccination on the one year anniversary of the last puppy vaccination, and then re-vaccination every 3 years after. Just one parvo vaccination is unlikely to be completely effective, but it may provide some protection, and if he contracts the disease it will likely be a milder form.

The risk is probably pretty low, but Lucy may not have full immunity for a couple of weeks after this last vaccine was administered. We booster this vaccine frequently to hopefully catch a dog during the window where antibody leftover from mom is declining and the puppy can make it's own immune response - this may have already happened, or she may be in the process of mounting this immune response now. If Lucy seems nauseous, if she is vomiting, or if her appetite is decreased I'd recommend seeing your vet right away.
