My puppy's tooth is bleeding and bent after tug-of-war. What to do?

Pet's info: Dog | Labradoodle | Male | neutered | 4 months and 29 days old | 83 lbs

I was playing with my dog and a toy and I guess I pulled too hard and he started bleeding. I believe it’s from one of his front k9’s (if that’s the word; sorry if it’s not). It looks like it got bent, what should I do? He still has all of his baby teeth I believe but I’m not sure. Please help.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Not to worry, this is no big deal. I can’t be totally certain but the picture appears that the little front teeth (incisors) are adult teeth. But the canines are baby teeth. And by the looks of the little bulges, the adult canines will be erupting soon.

Long story short, this was going to happen to this baby canine sooner or later anyway!. It does not hurt very much at all and will probably fall out completely (or he’ll swallow it) in the next day or so.

There is no way you’d be able to knock out an adult canine with a rope toy. So carry on with your tug-o-war and don’t worry if a baby tooth here and there are casualties!

Jasper will be losing his baby teeth for about another 6 weeks (until he is 6 months old). His adult teeth are currently pushing out his baby teeth, so his gums are more sensitive and easier to bleed right now. If the bleeding continues after his adult teeth are all in, I would certainly recommend having your veterinarian examine his gums to make sure they are healthy. Good luck! My 5-month puppy loses teeth playing tug of war. Should I worry?

Phoenix is adorable! At five months of age, it is the time when his puppy teeth are falling out and his adult teeth will be growing in, so it could be that the tug of war is playing a part in these baby teeth being dislodged. That being said, you don't want anything to disrupt the growth of his adult teeth, so I would hold off on the tug of war for now. I'd also have him mouth checked by a vet just to make sure that the roots of the teeth have fallen out so that his adult teeth can grow in without problem. I hope this helps!

My 6-month puppy lost a bloody tooth. Is it normal or did I hurt him?

Puppies are in the process of teething from 12 weeks to 6-7 months of age, so it's completely normal to see an occasional baby tooth with a bloody root on the floor during this time :) Often, there will also be small streaks of blood on toys or chew items - this is because the pup's gums are bleeding a little, and is also normal. All of his adult teeth should be coming in within the next 2-4 weeks, so after that the problem should resolve on its own.

My puppy's baby tooth got knocked out, another is loose. Is he okay?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the baby tooth that was knocked out came out intact, meaning the entire root is present then he should be fine. If the tooth was broken then it could abscess or affect the adult tooth. The loose one will fall out on its own as that is the normal progression. If you are planning to neuter him you can do it sooner and have the vet X-ray the broken tooth and remove it while he’s under. I hope this helps!

My 4-month puppy lost a canine tooth and is bleeding. How to stop it?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If you are able to apply something cold to that area it will help slow the bleeding down. I would recommend a cold pack for 10 to 15 minutes 2 to 3 times per day until resolved. I would also feed only soft food. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction! My toy poodle's adult tooth ripped out! What should I do now?

If there is any bleeding, this should be ideally stopped by applying gentle pressure on it with a wet swab. A check up would be ideal if unsure there is a piece of it still inside and make sure there is no infection on that site that would require an antibiotic treatment.
