My 6-month-old puppy is throwing up brown liquid. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Biscuit! I would actually recommend with holding fluids for 6 hours and food for 12-24 hours. If there is no vomiting in 6 hours offer small amounts of water frequently. If that goes well (no vomiting) then start feeding at 12-24 hours with a bland diet. use boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, foreign body blockage, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion or metabolic changes. If she continues to vomit she should be seen by your Vet before the weekend. I wish you and Biscuit the best!

Lulu is absolutely adorable! It depends on how Lulu is acting and if she is still vomiting. My concern is how old Lulu is. Puppies this young can become sick and decline very quickly. So if she is still vomiting, her energy level or anything is off, if any of the vomit has blood in it or if she starts to develop diarrhea then I would highly recommend taking her to a veterinarian as soon as possible. This can be something simple like just an upset stomach from eating something she wasn't supposed to but it could be something more especially since she is not fully vaccinated. So sorry to hear that Bubu is not feeling well! Puppies are very prone to intestinal parasites, and depending on which vaccines they have received, viral infections such as parvovirus. Bubu may have also eaten something he should not have which has blocked his intestinal tract or was toxic. He should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible as he is likely to become dehydrated very quickly as he loses fluids from vomiting and having diarrhea and not eating/drinking. His veterinarian will likely need to run some tests including blood work, a fecal exam, and take x-rays to determine the cause and prescribe medication to treat the condition. Poor pup. It is possible he just has an upset stomach from something he got into. Try feeding him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken or lean ground turkey and white rice for the next few meals to see if this can settle his stomach. However, if he continues to vomit, acts lethargic, or has a decreased appetite, then there could be something more serious going on internally that will require a vet visit to sort out. Be sure that you know if she is vomiting (belly goes in and out) versus regurgitation (burps up fluid) versus a cough with a terminal retch (cough is first followed by a gag of fluid). I don't know how old Honey is but she only weighs 5 lbs and that means if she is truly vomiting then she could get dehydrated quickly. If the vomiting is non-stop she should be taken to your Vet if open or an emergency hospital. If it has been a couple of times remove all water and food. Do not offer water for 4-6 hours of no vomiting and offer small amounts and ice chips. Do not offer food until 12-24 hours of no vomiting and offer it as a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day as small frequent meals. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once she starts eating she needs to see a Vet. Causes of vomiting are: intestinal parasites, foreign body (something is stuck and needs surgery to remove), dietary indiscretion, viral or bacterial infections, metabolic conditions, toxin ingestion, food allergy or intolerance. Vomiting can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Chewy evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid she is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check her hydration status and give her medications to make her feel better. Good luck!

This is definitely concerning - if your pup is not current on her booster vaccines, I would be very worried that she may have parvo. She may also have an upset stomach due to something she has eaten. If she is acting normal otherwise, you can try withholding food for the next 12 hours to help settle her stomach, then offer some plain boiled chicken and white rice. If she continues to vomit even though you aren't feeding her, or if she is acting lethargic or having any other symptoms, then I would recommend having her seen tonight by an emergency vet if possible as she may have a serious problem.
