My 4-month beagle puppy is too thin. Should I give calcium for weight?

I recommend googling Purina body condition scoring chart to determine if Aura is too thin. A score of 4-5/9 is ideal with ribs palpable with minimal or no excess fat covering, a waist easily noted when viewed from above and an abdominal tuck is evident from the side. Puppies should usually be on a puppy chow until 11-12 months of age. Good luck!

A balanced puppy food which has been specially formulated to be a complete diet should not be supplemented as this can lead to dietary excess, which can also be harmful to bone development. Check that the puppy food is suitable for the age and breed type and if you have concerns about bone and joint development I recommend a full physical by your vet to determine which, if any, supplementation is required

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bone is SUPER cute!! I do not recommend calcium supplementation. Once Bone is 5-6 weeks old start feeding him a commercial puppy food, like Purina puppy chow. If you are bottle feeding him with a puppy formula you can start mixing that with puppy food now. All commercial puppy foods are nutritionally balance. Over supplementing calcium can cause harm. I hope this helps!

First you want to make sure that Teddy is parasite free as parasites will rob his body of nutrients. Secondly, some breeds are naturally thin at his age. When he goes in for his next veterinary visit, make sure to ask the doctor about his weight. Lastly, don’t be in a hurry to put weight on Teddy. Rapid changes in body condition are not good. Instead feed a high-quality, small breed puppy food. Brands like Royal Canin and Science Diet have additional calories in their small breed formula which is different than a normal puppy food. There is not a photograph attached to this post. If she is too thin, I recommend to increase her food intake. Also make sure she is current on her deworming medication. Puppies at her age are lanky, they are like teenagers so being thin is normal. They don’t generally begin to fill out until closer to one year of age. If she is underweight she may have an underlying medical condition. I suggest you have her examined by a vet. That is big weight discrepancy. Be sure you are feeding her a high quality food like Royal Canin puppy and be sure she has been properly dewormed. You can also try this supplement. Yes she is probably slightly overweight, you can start by changing her food to a lower calorie diet (could be from the same brand), you need to be very strict regarding the quantity of food you are giving her daily (as instructed on the food label). if it doesn't help she will then need to be put on a prescription diet for weight loss. the tit sag is normal, it might not go back to the previous state completely but will get much better with time.
