My 13-week puppy is teething but her teeth aren't coming in. Normal?

This is completely normal and right on schedule. These are the first teeth to fall out. Adult teeth will appear in those spots soon. The teething process takes about 6-10 weeks total. Most of the time, the teeth just seem to disappear....puppies swallow them or they end up in the grass outside, etc. Usually the last teeth to fall out are the canine or “fang” teeth. There can be some variation in teeth eruption time. By 8 weeks I expect to see most teeth erupted. If by 10 weeks they are not there then a consultation with a veterinarian with dental radiographs or a referral to a veterinary dentist would be ideal. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Some smaller breeds may have delayed eruption of thier baby teeth but typically by 9 weeks canines should be visible. In rare cases this may require veterinary assistance such as incising the gums. I would recommend talking to your vet at D's next puppy visit for vaccinations. Or scheduling an oral exam just to be safe. Dental radiographs may be needed to assess her dentition.

Usually the puppy teeth will not come out until the adult teeth are pushing through. At this point you can continue to monitor the area. Watch for any signs of infection in the tissue like redness or discharge. Most adult canines will start growing in between 5.5 - 6 months of age. if they are not grown in by 8 months of age or if you see any evidence of infection, have him examined by the veterinarian. Well this isn't normal! I'm wondering if you are sure that Hazel did lose her baby incisors. It does happen that the baby teeth don't always fall out, and the adult teeth grow in behind them. This is something that needs to be checked out by a vet, and if she has retained her baby teeth, then they will need to be removed to make room for her adult teeth. Chihuahuas can be quite small, and purebred Chihuahuas should not weigh more than 5.9lb. Reese's weight is normal, but it is not normal that all of her teeth haven't come in. She should have had all her adult teeth a long time ago (around 7-8 months of age). It could be she has retained baby teeth that are preventing the adult teeth from coming in, and she will need to see a vet. I would take her into a vet on Monday to get her mouth checked out. This is not normal but it is common. The deciduous teeth may fall out but they may not. I cannot tell you what will happen. I suggest you just monitor the teeth and if by 8 months of age they have not come out on their own then you will need to have them extracted.
