My 16-month-old Chihuahua's adult teeth haven't come in. What to do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! From your picture it appears to be a baby canine tooth. In small breed dogs sometimes the baby teeth can become retained and the puppy doesn’t lose them at all. I recommend removing the baby teeth that haven’t shed on their own when the puppy is spayed or neutered. My thoughts are that at least one Chacha’s baby canine teeth didn’t shed when it was supposed to. It was likely delayed. And it’s a GOOD thing it’s out now. If you are worried have your Vet take a look to see if any more baby teeth are present and discuss removing them at her spay. I hope this helps and have a great day!

many chihuahuas lose their front teeth and sometimes even other teeth at a young age, this breed is prone for very bad dentition and it is not considered abnormal. in most cases it does not cause pain and does not cause any problem eating, especially if only the front teeth are the issue.

This is not uncommon in the breed. If Scott is an adult Chihuahua, he may have periodontal disease which could be affecting his teeth. If he is a puppy between 4 and 6 months of age, he may be losing puppy teeth which is normal. Without a physical exam, it is difficult to determine what may be causing the loose teeth. Since he is new to you, consider having him examined by your veterinarian. If necessary, a complete oral exam and dental cleaning may resolve the problem. If his teeth are "bad", he may need to have the loose ones extracted to prevent pain and infection.

Puppies usually have their baby teeth in by 6 weeks old. Sugar's teeth may be a little bit slow at coming in, and may or may not fully erupt. Her baby teeth should fall out and should be replaced by her adult teeth by 6 months of age. She may just need a little longer for them to grow in, but if not, I recommend making an appointment to have her seen by your vet to make sure there are no issues such as gum irritation happening. It is not uncommon for smaller breeds to have retained deciduous (baby) teeth. Have Peanut examined by your veterinarian. If the teeth are not loose, they will need to be manually extracted. This can be done when she is under anesthesia for her spay. Left in, the baby teeth can cause adult teeth to become misaligned causing bite issues. As you're seeing, the space between can collect food which will promote bacterial growth, infection and bad breath.

It appears that Keke may have a retained deciduous (baby) tooth. This is common in smaller breeds. If the tooth does not fall out by 6 months of age, have her evaluated by your veterinarian. The baby tooth should be removed so that it doesn't push the adult tooth out of alignment. Since she is spayed already, she may to be anesthetized again.
