My puppy is teething and chewing. Does Benadryl help or what else?

Benadryl won't help whatsoever so there is absolutely no indication to give it in this case, i would not recommend trying to medicate your puppy for teething, all dogs go through this and although it can be uncomfortable it's usually not painful top the point of giving pain killers. just a reminder as well, all human pain killers are potentially very toxic to dogs.

Poor puppy! Soak a wash cloth in cold water and freeze it. Then give it to him, but make sure to watch him closely the whole time. There are also toys you can get from the pet store that can be frozen and then given to him to help with teeth pain. Do NOT give him any human pain medications, many are toxic to puppies and can be fatal if given. Speak to his vet about prescribing him safe pain medications. I hope this helps!

Hello. Benadryl will not help the runny nose in your puppy as she may have a mild upper respiratory infection. If she is eating & drinking well, playful & active, this will probably resolve on its own. The itchy skin might be from fleas, or mites. Make sure you are treating her with an age appropriate flea product & if she continues to itch, I would dip her once a week in a Lime Sulfur product that you can purchase on-line or at most Tractor Supply stores. This would be much better than Benadryl. If the nasal discharge turns thick or your puppy seems unwell, please see your veterinarian as soon as possible. Teething time in puppies can be difficult! While you can play with Chloe with plush toys, I would only do so supervised as she may be able to rip open a seam and eat the stuffing/squeaker. Rubber toys are great when teething, and filling the inside of a rubber toy with peanut butter (regular peanut butter, not one with artificial sugars that may be toxic) and putting it in the freezer can be a great option for the need to chew! If Chloe likes ice, you can also mix water and low sodium chicken broth together to make chicken flavored ice cubes for her to chew on.

Benadryl would not help with a sore throat because Benadryl is an anti histamine. Typically for a sore throat you would use an anti inflammatory. However if you feel like he has a mild allergy Benadryl could help. Benadryl can provide a small level of sedation depending on the pet.

Poor Knox. I am so sorry he is going through that. What exactly is happening at night that is harder for him? I would not add Benadryl to the mix. It sounds like he is on some good pain control medications. Make sure that he is eating small more frequent amounts rather than just two big meals and that it's something more blend for him as he's recovering. If you feel so he is not doing well at night, I would call your veterinarian first thing in the morning or take him to the ER if you do feel as though he is in pain.
