My puppy's leg is swollen and he's sick. No vet nearby, what do I do?

Your puppy needs to be seen by a veterinarian today as this sounds like an emergency. It is obviously in pain, and it is showing signs of a severe infection such as parvo. Please take your puppy to a PetER now.

Poor Nico! Nico needs to see his veterinarian today. A swollen leg could indicate infection, a soft tissue injury or even something like a fractured bone. The veterinarian may need to do an x-ray to figure out what is going on. It sounds like he is in pain so get this done quickly. Ouch, poor Peyton! I would rest him tonight, and then have him seen by a vet in the morning. It could be that he strained a ligament or muscle, but it is concerning that the leg appears to be swollen and he is favoring it. Don't allow him to run, jump, or play tonight. Take Peyton out to toilet on a lead and bring him right back in when he's done. Then have him seen by a vet in the morning to diagnose what is causing the pain so he can be treated. Please do not give him any human pain medications, as many are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. The vet can prescribe him some safe pain medications as needed.

With these symptoms, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine Dangly so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. With the swollen leg and vomiting, there could be a systemic illness or infection going on. I would have his blood tested and have x-rays taken of the leg and abdomen. Poor Luke! Swelling at the injection site is pretty unusual, but can be very uncomfortable. The swelling can be controlled with anti-inflammatory medication, and should definitely be reported to your vet so they can potentially modify the vaccines Luke gets in the future. In the meantime, you should try to keep Luke comfortable and calm until he can be seen by his vet. I hope all is well!

I am so very soory your pet has such a severe injury and no available vet anywhere for the moment. There isn't a whole lot you can do to help with the pain besides soaking this area in a Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water bath to help relieve some of the inflammation and also cut down on any bacteria that may develop at the site of the injury. You should also clean this daily with sterile saline. Applying a cold compress (for 5 mins max twice daily) on the area first can also help with pain anf inflammation. We can't recommend any over the counter pain medicine b/c they can be quite toxic in pets and therefore we can't risk it. I would try to do this and wrap the leg as best you can with materials (Tefla pad, continuous gauze, cast padding) from your local pharmacy. You can certainly also look up "how to bandage your pets leg" on youtube to learn how to do this safely and without cutting off any circulation in the process. Then work diligently to try and find any vet in the area that can help your poor puppy moving forward, because it sounds like he will certainly need medical attention moving forward if we are going to help him save this leg. The damage done to her leg could be soft tissue or as extensive as a fracture. Until being able to get her to a vet the best you can do it’s try icing her leg and restricting her activity. If you have a crate for her it would be recommended to keep her in that most of the time so that she does not cause any more trauma to the leg just by trying to walk or run around When she needs to go to the bathroom take her for a short slow walk. Getting her to a vet sooner vs later is highly recommended as they will be able to determine the full extent of the injury and prescribe her some pain medications to ease the pain.
