Is puppy swelling & pooping less normal after cryptorchid surgery?

Hello, thank you for your question. General anesthesia can decrease overall GI motility. Additionally Peluche was likely fasted before this procedure. I would not be too concerned about the lack of defecation. If he is otherwise eating, drinking, and acting ok it is fine to continue to monitor him. Things should return to normal very soon. Since retrieving the retained testicle is a little more invasive than a regular neuter, it's not unusual for there to be some puffiness and a little oozing, especially if he's feeling good and is moving around. If he seems fine otherwise and the site continues to improve, I would keep an eye on it. You may want to call your vet and maybe send them this pic to get their opinion, but I don't see anything to be alarmed about. If he loses his appetite, acts like he's not feeling well, if the site gets red, hot, oozes blood or pus, get him in to see your vet right away.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Swelling of scrotum is not uncommon after neutering. As long as the swelling is not painful to touch, is not bothering Sheldon and he is acting as normal, you can monitor him at home. However, if the scrotum becomes hot to touch, painful or your dog is lethargic, you should take him back to your vets for a course of painkillers and anti-inflammatory medications. Typically, this kind of swelling goes down a few days after castration.

I wouldn't be too worried yet. But it does sound like He may be a little uncomfortable. If the veterinarian sent home pain medication I would make sure to give it as directed. If they didn't I would give them a call to discuss (there are not any over the counter pain medications that are safe to give ). The (mild) scrotal swelling is very normal. Keeping him inactive and resting for the next week is helpful in preventing the swelling from worsening. If Boog stops eating, if the swelling get suddenly worse, if his gums look pale at any point then I would have him rechecked by a vet. Hope boog is back to himself very soon.

Pain after neutering does occur, and your vet can give you pain medication for him if they haven't already. After neutering, some dogs can be tired and want to rest a little more than usual. Keep an eye on the stitches where the surgery was done, and make sure they don't become red and swollen. Do not let your dog lick the stitches. Your dog likely didn't poop until this morning because they weren't allowed any food for 12 hours before the surgery, so they wouldn't have anything to poop out. Butt scooting can also indicate parasites, so if his worming isn't up to date, I would get worming tablets from your vet. If the incision site becomes red, swollen, and warm to the touch, I would contact your vet right away for an appointment. It is also okay to give your vet a call if you are concerned about your dog being in pain, and see what options they can give you for pain relief.

Given that Stanley was recently neutered and had abdominal surgery to find the undescended testicle, he may be a little painful still and that's causing him to cry out in pain when pooping. It could be as well that if he is on pain medication, it is making him a little constipated, and you can try adding a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie filling) in with his food to see if that helps. If this doesn't help, and he's still crying when pooping after 24-48 hours, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.

A photo may be helpful; is the swelling under the suture line? If he is acting totally normal and the sutures look good, and he is not painful when you press on the swelling, and you don't see any discharge/he isn't licking at it, etc, then I don't think its urgent, however I would recommend that you have him evaluate by your vet sometime in the next few days. We may be able to further advise you if you post again and attach a photo. If you do so, please also tell us what day the surgery was (so we know how many days since surgery).
