My puppy swallowed something, has red lump. Vet closed, what to do?

If the pup is nursing and acting normal he should be fine. Puppies are very flexible and usually heal quickly with injuries. If he's not eating or acting different from the rest then he may have a more serious injury. Your veterinarian will examine the pup and may give an anti inflammatory injection to reduce the swelling especially if there is a neurological problem. In the meantime you can put a cold pack on the area to reduce the swelling. There is not much else to do. Even if it seems bad as long as you keep the pup fed and warm he should improve with minimal treatment. There are many possibilities, an absess, blocked salivary gland, insect bite or injury would be the most common causes for rapid swelling. The reduced appetite is a concern, this may be due to discomfort, narrowing of the throat or fever. If this persist or increases overnight he should be checked by your vet, monitor for any changes to his breathing which would require an emergency visit

Please, take Martha to your local vets to confirm the diagnosis and to start treatment for her. If it is an abscess, Martha will need a course of antibiotics and possibly lancing of the abscess. If it is salivary gland cyst, your vet will likely recommend surgery as conservative treatment for salivary cysts does not provide satisfactory results.

This type of injury where you have vocalization, limping, and swelling definitely needs to be looked at by your veterinarian. A thorough physical exam of the area and potentially radiographs of the bones are needed here to provide the care that Stormy needs after an injury to this degree. I would highly recommend taking him in to be seen as soon as you can. You are not going to be able to care for an injury like this at home. For tonight, its best to just keep Stormy quiet in an isolated room without any other pets to disturb him and apply a cold compress to the swollen area, if tolerated, for about 3-5 mins. It doesn't look great, but if he is eating and drinking, he does not have a fever, and the area isn't hot, you can wait until tomorrow morning to have him seen by his vet. If the area becomes hot, he gets a fever, or he stops eating or drinking, have him seen by an ER vet right away. I hope this helps!

Based on what you are describing and the location of the lump I would be concerned that your dog has either enlarged lymph nodes (either from infection or cancer) or an abscess. Since your dog has these symptoms and is lethargic as well I would be concerned about a systemic illness. A warm compress may promote drainage. Use an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking. Keep the area clean and dry. If it doesn't heal after rupture or if it spreads, have Muffin examined by your veterinarian.
