Why did my 8-week-old puppy die suddenly after struggling to breathe?

I'm sorry for the loss of this puppy. Unfortunately, without a history or a post mortem exam, it would be near impossible to determine cause of death. In an otherwise healthy pup though, congenital defect would be suspected. The sad truth is the cause may never be determined.

I am so sorry to hear about the passing of your puppy. Unfortunately, the only way to know for sure if to have a necropsy (autopsy preformed). This is strictly a guess, but the most common reason for the sudden death is a heart defect. I recommend to call the breeder and alert them. They may need to do more screening on the parents and keep a record in case it happens to other puppies. Again, I am so sorry for the loss of your sweet puppy. My condolences.

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of Penelope. Unfortunately, without an necropsy (autopsy), there is no way to know for sure what happened. A few things that can happen could include a bad heart, an outpouching of a large blood vessel that ruptures internally or an aneurysm. Try to focus on the positive memories you made with her. It's so hard to lose them. My condolences.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am so sorry!! It is very hard when puppies are this young. The most common cause of illness and death in puppies are infections and congenital issues. Common infections that can affect the respiratory system and or the neurologic system are: Herpes, distemper, bordatella, influenza. Sadly I recommend doing special testing on the next puppy that dies to find out the cause. I would request PCR swabs to send off for a respiratory panel and biopsy any abnormal tissues on autopsy. Sometime we can not save them when we do not know what the disease is. If you can not get to the Vet in town go to a specialist or local Veterinary school. It is important to know what is going on. First off, I'm extremely sorry Belle died suddenly! Please accept my condolences for your loss. Without seeing her in person, I can't say for certain what caused her to die, but it could be she was suffering from heart disease. That would cause a cough, and can lead to sudden death. If you want a definitive answer, you could take her into a vet for a necropsy (an autopsy for dogs). Again, I'm very sorry for your loss.

He may have had an injury, been hit by a car or he had a congenital heart defect that caused a blood clot at the bifurcation of the aorta (that paralyses hind legs and hurts terribly). This can also cause a clot in the lungs which would cause breathing problems. Unfortunately most cats with these blood clots die within a short time. I am so sorry for your loss. This is very sad.

Heart failure, a seizure that caused aspiration or non-cardiogenic pulmonary edema, choking, a severe allergic reaction, twisted stomach or an internal bleed. With out an autopsy we will never know. Again I am so very sorry for your loss!
