When can my puppy start training treats and what homemade treats?

Thank you for using Pet Coach. Luffy is old enough to have plenty of teeth in order to chew, so you can give him treat anytime. However, be cautious in how many you give and how many different things you give as you don’t want to cause him any vomiting or diarrhea. Your puppy is still a bit young for lots of training, he is still a baby. I suggest you book in to a puppy training class once his vaccinations are done. As for treats, it is not always necessary to give food treats. Praising is a great treat and works just as well, if not better. Hello, and thanks for your question. You can start both of these things anytime! 6 weeks of age is an ok time to start treats, and give a bath if needed. Just make sure the treats are used for training purposes only, and most of his nutrition is gained from a high quality puppy food. Hope this helps.

At 6 weeks of age, your puppy should be eating dog food. You could mix it with a little bit of water or puppy milk replacer to make it softer, if needed. Any type of dog treat would also be appropriate. You could look for a softer treat, like Lean Treats, as they would be easy to eat.

A few general recommendations: stick with well known brands with a good reputation. Look for products made in the USA. Kibble works great for treats and I use Purina Pro Plan chicken or lamb and rice. Dry biscuit type treats usually have less calories and salt. The jerky or moist type treats are fine in moderation (they have more calories and salt usually). Lastly, many dogs really like dehydrated chicken livers and chicken jerky. In minimal quantity it could be fine, but be aware they may cause diarrhoea and stomach upset. It would be best to getting him used to carrots and similar healthy treats which can be then used for training as well.
