My puppy is sick, not eating, lethargic, and has diarrhea. What to do?

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Tiger is not feeling well. The clinical signs you describe are concerning when they occur in a puppy as they can be seen with serious gastrointestinal infections such as Parvovirus. Other possibilities include intestinal worms and dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. The sooner these conditions are treated the better the outcome tends to be. For this reason, I recommend that you have Tiger evaluated by your veterinarian to check for these possibilities and to start therapy based on findings. It always concerns me when young puppies get lethargic. Puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) than adult dogs, so diarrhea is more serious for Wallace than it would be for an adult dog. If he's back to acting normally, eating, drinking, and doesn't have further diarrhea or vomiting, it's perfectly fine to continue monitoring him at home. However, if he remains lethargic, has more mucousy diarrhea, begins to vomit, or refuses to eat or drink normal amounts, then you should have him examined by his vet. Your vet will need to do a physical exam. Depending on their suspicions based on their exam findings, they may recommend some diagnostic testing or may opt to start him on some medications. Possible causes of this type of issue include stomach upset from a virus, intestinal parasites, among many other issues. If your vet finds that Wallace is dehydrated, they'll also be able to give him some fluids. I hope that he feels better soon!

Hello and thank you for your question. I am sorry to hear Texas is not feeling very well. Vomiting, lethargy, diarrhea, and decreased appetite are very concerning signs and have many causes behind them. Infectious causes, internal organ dysfunction, or a foreign body or GI obstruction could be at play. Texas is really better off in the care of a veterinarian today as a veterinary hospital will be able to diagnose and treat Texas effectively and give him the proper care he needs. If a vet isn't an option, there are not a lot of home treatments for these symptoms. Try and keep Texas hydrated to offering water to him frequently and offering him unflavored pedialyte in his water may help as well as feeding him a bland diet of boiled chicken and rice. There could be a couple of things wrong with Tank. It could be that he is suffering from a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have intestinal worms, or could have a foreign body causing the diarrhea. It is concerning that he's acting lethargic, and given that he has now diarrhea for 24 hours and the bland diet isn't working (the lethargy shows he's not feeling better), I would say it's time for a vet visit. Hello. I am sorry to hear that Sugar is feeling so sick. When a puppy is lying around, not eating or drinking they are usually very ill. This may be either an infection (like Parvo), a problem she was born with (a congenital problem), or possibly something she ate or got into. I understand you are short on finances. Please offer Sugar some baby food directly into her mouth. If she will not take baby food from you and has not eaten all day her blood sugar may get dangerously low. You should see if she can lick up a small amount of karo syrup to try and increase her blood sugar level. If at all possible I would get her to an emergency veterinarian tonight to have her assessed. At least an exam can give you a lot of information about her vitals and they can lead you in the right direction to try and get her better. I hope the best for her.

I am concerned about Tyson feeling so cold. If you have a rectal thermometer, you can take his temperature. Normal is 100-102. If it is low, he should see a vet immediately. Also, you can place a small amount of honey or caro syrup on his gums in case he is hypoglycemic. Other potential causes for his illness include intestinal parasites (even if he was already dewormed once, they are still possible), GI blockage, bacterial or viral infection, food intolerance, among a few other possibilities. Any puppy that is lethargic or has vomiting and/or diarrhea should see a vet if the symptoms last more than 24 hours as they can get dehydrated very quickly.

Poor puppy. That looks like digested food that he vomited up. He may have eaten something that he shouldn't have. Therefore I would try to fast him for 12 hours and then offer him small amounts of boiled chicken and plain rice. If he is still vomiting, lethargic, or has lack of appetite and diarrhea, then I would be concerned he may have either intestinal parasites or has contracted the deadly parvovirus. It is best to have him seen by your local veterinarian if he is not getting better. Hopefully he just got into something he shouldn't have and will show improvement within the next 12 to 24 hours.
