Is my puppy's scaly ear patch ringworm? When should I see a vet?

From the pictures, it doesn't look like a typical ringworm lesion but I can't rule it out without seeing August in person. It could be a skin infection or from an injury. It should be checked out by a vet, but it's not an emergency. If you can get her into a vet this weekend great, but it's fine to wait until Monday. I'd leave the spot alone for now and don't put anything on it since you do not know what is causing it. I hope this helps!

It is not possible to assess this "dry patch of skin" without at least a photo or a hands on exam. Your vet likely noticed it but did not think it was a problem and thereforee did not mention it. I suggest you ring your vet tomorrow and ask him what he thinks this patch is and if he does not remember it take the puppy back and have him examine it. I am sure the move to a new owner can be delayed for a day. Be up front with the new owners and tell them you want this checked out before the puppy leaves to ensure all is well. Dry flaky skin can be the result of an overgrowth of mites that live in the dog's hair follicles or even ringworm. The treatment for these conditions is quite different. Even though a picture would help to understand better the underlying cause, this presentation could be due to a trauma or localized spot of skin infection (likely to be caused by bacteria). A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Ringworm has a characteristic round shape, and while it doesn't appear Maverick has ringworm from your picture, without seeing him in person, I can't say for certain. I would take him into the vet in the morning, and the vet can diagnose if he has ringworm with a Wood's lamp and/or fungal culture. If he does have ringworm, the vet can prescribe treatment for it. This is suspicious of ringworm (a fungal infection of the skin). This could also be due to a yeast or bacteria infection, but I think it's much more likely to be ringworm.. It's best to take him to the veterinarian soon, because ringworm can spread to different parts of the body and can spread to people.
