When can my puppy run with me on trails? How far can a puppy walk?

Her bones will continue to grow until she is about a year old and so I always recommend some limits on them until that time such as no long distance running or mountain biking. For walks in the park however, I would say she is fine to go a couple of miles. I would base it more off of her behavior once she gets home. If she is exhausted then I would decrease the distance.

Hello, I would let Jasper jog as much as he enjoys with you, while watching him for signs of exhaustion or overheating. If he becomes tired, allow him to rest and drink and do not push him to continue jogging. Try taking him for a few test jogs to see how long Jasper generally wants to run at a time. I think three miles may be a bit long of a distance for a young puppy, but he will likely be able to handle that just fine once he is an adult. I hope this is helpful. Although there are no hard-and-fast rules, we suspect that allowing puppies to exercise at intense levels such as running 5/week may predispose them to joint issues. Because of this, most veterinarians recommend waiting until puppies are skeletally mature at 1 year of age before they start routinely exercise such as daily runs. Make sure your dog is fully vaccinated at that time as well.

This distance should be fine as long as you are periodically taking breaks during these walks / runs to prevent over-exertion. In the summer months, take care to provide plenty of water for Leo and if it is too hot, I would recommend shortening the walks / runs. I hope this helps! At 10 months, Phoenix is old enough for this type of activity. I recommend no "forced" exercise, such as on-leash running until after a year of age, but he is definitely old enough to start some basic agility training. I recommend starting with short training periods, for a few minutes at a time. If he is doing well, you can increase the duration of training periods. If he loses interest, then keep the sessions short. Trying to force him to stay focused for longer will take the fun out of it for both of you. As far as leash walks go, start with a mile and if he still has lots of energy, you can increase to 2 miles. At this age I would have no issues with him walking a few miles, as long as you increase the distance slowly and give him chances to stop, sniff, and take breaks. Every dog is a little different, and the most important thing is to watch Phoenix and make sure he doesn't seem to be getting too tired.

The average dog should be able to tolerate a 30 minute walk. Distance is relative because a 1 mile walk for a small breed dog will differ from a 1 mile walk with a large breed dog. If your dog will tolerate a walk of "several miles", then you can continue. If he comes up lame or slows down, then decrease the distance/time.

What a cutie! I would follow his lead in the amount of exercise he needs. You are correct in that going running or prolonged jogging in a young dog is not a good idea, as their growth plates are still developing, so we recommend waiting until they are over a year old. Walks, however, and playtime outside with you are fantastic. If he is seeming like he is overly tired or not enthusiastic to continue walking, this would be a cue to slow down/stop. As he gets continued exercise his endurance will increase, just like a person starting to exercise.
