When can my puppy run with me on trails? How far can a puppy walk?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 9 days old | 20 lbs

Hello, I'm getting a 3 month old Australian Shepherd puppy this weekend and just wondering at what age would I be able to take him running? I usually run on a dirt trail at the park and never more than 3-4 miles. I'm assuming running is too early at this age, so I'm wondering how long/far can I take my puppy for walks?

At this age your puppy can walk a couple miles but not run, you will be able to introduce him to distance running at the age of 6 months, you should do it very gradually though (every week increase up to half a mile.

If he can walk 2 miles with you, you can try more vigorous exercise. Begin with short hikes and watch for lameness or exercise intolerance. Being a smaller dog, you can carry him to give him a break when needed.
