How far should I walk my dog? Is walking several miles too much?

Her bones will continue to grow until she is about a year old and so I always recommend some limits on them until that time such as no long distance running or mountain biking. For walks in the park however, I would say she is fine to go a couple of miles. I would base it more off of her behavior once she gets home. If she is exhausted then I would decrease the distance.

Start slow. Pets need to be conditioned just like people. Begin by walking her for 1/2 mile as long as she seems comfortable. Do this for a few days. If she seems to be doing well and does not seem stiff or sore after a few days of doing this walk, increase to 1 mile. Every 2 weeks, increase by 1/2 mile. Monitor her for any signs that she is uncomfortable afterwards or is having trouble completing the route. Pets are all individuals just like people and vary in their fitness and metabolic rates. The key is to start slow and gradually build up as she builds up strength and endurance. Most dogs her size will walk two miles comfortably once they are in shape. This can vary depending on the dog, their healthy status and if it’s a walk for exercise or if you are walking them to use the bathroom (like if you didn’t have a yard). To use the bathroom, dogs should have 5 or more opportunities a day for a potty break. Otherwise a walk once or twice a day for exercise is normal. If once a day works for him and he is at a healthy weight then that is fine. If you think he may need to lose some weight then more frequent walks such as twice or three times a day would be better. Hello! There is no precise answer for this. I tell people it's easiest to use common sense and let the puppy tell them what is too much. A long walk in the park or a short hike in the mountains (under 1 hour) should be fine. If you are expecting him to run behind your bike for even 20 minutes, this is likely too much. If he keeps up and seems happy and playful, that's just right. If he is lagging behind and seems worn out, too much! And make sure you offer water often especially when it's warm outside.

This is a great question! Yes, there is a concern that dogs who aren't fully grown shouldn't have too much exercise because it can have negative effects on their growth. The amount of exercise a dog of Oly's age should get is five minutes for every month of age; therefore, he should be getting at least 40 minutes of exercise twice a day. You can add on five minutes for each month of age to his exercise, and I would wait to do such long walks until he is fully grown (around 18 months of age).
