When can my puppy start agility training and long walks safely?

At what age can a puppy begin doing agility/going on longer walks and such? I know you can't do that with a young puppy due to them growing and developing, I was just wondering when they would be safe to start that kind of training

At 10 months, Phoenix is old enough for this type of activity. I recommend no "forced" exercise, such as on-leash running until after a year of age, but he is definitely old enough to start some basic agility training. I recommend starting with short training periods, for a few minutes at a time. If he is doing well, you can increase the duration of training periods. If he loses interest, then keep the sessions short. Trying to force him to stay focused for longer will take the fun out of it for both of you. As far as leash walks go, start with a mile and if he still has lots of energy, you can increase to 2 miles. At this age I would have no issues with him walking a few miles, as long as you increase the distance slowly and give him chances to stop, sniff, and take breaks. Every dog is a little different, and the most important thing is to watch Phoenix and make sure he doesn't seem to be getting too tired.

What a cutie! I would follow his lead in the amount of exercise he needs. You are correct in that going running or prolonged jogging in a young dog is not a good idea, as their growth plates are still developing, so we recommend waiting until they are over a year old. Walks, however, and playtime outside with you are fantastic. If he is seeming like he is overly tired or not enthusiastic to continue walking, this would be a cue to slow down/stop. As he gets continued exercise his endurance will increase, just like a person starting to exercise.

How much walking is too much for my growing puppy at the park?

Her bones will continue to grow until she is about a year old and so I always recommend some limits on them until that time such as no long distance running or mountain biking. For walks in the park however, I would say she is fine to go a couple of miles. I would base it more off of her behavior once she gets home. If she is exhausted then I would decrease the distance.

It sounds like Phoenix is an energetic puppy! Some puppies are more playful and energetic than others. Chasing and running around with other dogs should be fine for him, we don't recommend taking your dog on a run with you until they are full grown, but play running is fine. I would recommend working on training him to come when called in case you do need to catch him though. My 6-week puppy is gaining weight. How much exercise and safe walks?

Puppies will gain a lot of weight in the first couple months of life, and it's never recommended to worry about their weight at a young age. In addition, he should not be talking long walks, at most he will need 10 minutes of exercise twice a day. A puppy should get 5 minutes of exercise twice a day for every month of age, i.e. at 3 months 15 minutes, 4 months 20 minutes, etc. I would not talk him on walks just yet given that he is fully vaccinated. You can play with him in your yard, but do not worry about his weight and do not over exercise him. Too much exercise will be detrimental to his growth.
