Does my puppy on Royal Canin need calcium or multivitamin supplements?

Puppies at this age should not be given supplements, as too many vitamins and too much calcium is detrimental to her health and growth. She will be getting all the nutrients she needs from her Royal Canin, which is an excellent puppy food. I would continue feeding her the Royal Canin puppy food, and not give her the homemade diet. The only food she needs is her puppy food, and the homemade diet may make her gain too much weight. You can start giving her the MyBeau supplements when she is a year old and eating an adult food.

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I do not recommend adding a calcium supplement to puppy food it can affect bone growth significantly in a puppy. I recommend stopping that immediately unless directed by your Vet. As for the fish oil, that is fine but how often depends on the brand you are using. Please just used a balanced diet made for puppies. All those supplements are not good for a growing puppy. Those should only be fed as an adult and only if needed. If you feed a well-balanced, high quality diet like Royal Canin he should not need any supplements. Using those in a puppy is asking for trouble. I am assuming you mean Royal Canin for rc? A balanced puppy food which has been specially formulated to be a complete diet should not be supplemented as this can lead to dietary excess, which can also be harmful to bone development. Check that the puppy food is suitable for the age and breed type and if you have concerns about bone and joint development I recommend a full physical by your vet to determine which, if any, supplementation is required

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Bone is SUPER cute!! I do not recommend calcium supplementation. Once Bone is 5-6 weeks old start feeding him a commercial puppy food, like Purina puppy chow. If you are bottle feeding him with a puppy formula you can start mixing that with puppy food now. All commercial puppy foods are nutritionally balance. Over supplementing calcium can cause harm. I hope this helps!

I would caution against giving too many supplements. The calcium supplement is definitely not needed. Research has shown that over-supplementation of calcium in puppies leads to bone abnormalities. The multi-vitamin also may not be needed. In fact, if your puppy is placed on a higher quality dog food (besides the Pedigree), you won't need any supplements at all. I would highly suggest slowly transitioning Roonie to high quality food such as: Royal Canin, Wellness, Merrick, Hill's Science diet, etc. The dewormer you selected is the standard one that we start every puppy on, so you are on the right track there because it covers roundworms and hookworms. The Drontal plus covers a few more worms: whipworms and tapeworms. So it is warranted to give if you have suspicions or proof that Roonie is infected with these worms. You will see tapeworms if they were present, because they are visible with the naked eye and look like tiny fried rice when dried. You won't see whipworms, but the stool would be a little soft if present. Although, it won't hurt if you just wanted to give it to make sure you cover most parasites that Roonie could be infected with. However we always encourage you to just get Roonie's fecal tested by your vet so that you know for sure what, if any, parasites are present.
