Puppy still has roundworms after deworming. Can I use store dewormer?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 1 month and 17 days old

I just found a round worm in my puppies poop. She was just dewormed less than a week ago, would one safe to deworm her again with dewormer from a store like petco or Walmart?

Hello there! If the worm wasn't moving, it was likely dead, and some worms do get excreted once they die from the dewormer instead of being resorbed into the body, especially if Skye had a lot of them. I would not give her more dewormer without the advice of a veterinarian at this point as they will likely deworm her again at her next appointment. Good luck, and I hope Skye grows up to be a healthy, happy young dog! :)

Hi there. If the worms are alive and moving, this means that the puppies need another round of dewormer - it's not uncommon for pups to need more than one round to get rid of all the parasites they may have. If they're acting normal, there's no need to rush them to an emergency vet, but I would recommend getting a dewormer from your regular veterinarian (or taking them in for an exam, if needed) tomorrow morning.

If the puppy is still feeding from the mother, then yes they should both be dewormed. Also you will need to repeat the deworming in 2 weeks because of the life cycle of the worm. I hope this helps and best wishes getting rid of your pets worms. Take care.
