My puppy had worms. Will I see them in every poop after medicine?

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Parasite eggs are microscopic so I'm wondering if what you're seeing in the stool is actually eggs. It could be adult roundworms or even tapeworm eggs. It is not uncommon to see the adult roundworms as they are killed by the deworming process. If it is tapeworm eggs, you may need to end up treating for fleas (as this is how tapeworms are spread). The Dolpac should help treat for tapeworms and the praziquantel should be effective for giardia and roundworms. It is possible that you may end up needed to retreat but I suspect what you are seeing may be normal for the deworming process. Definitely take a fecal sample back to your veterinarian in about 3 weeks to ensure the infection is cleared. Also the prevent reinfection make sure to clean up your dogs feces from the yard. If at any time Echo seems to be acting ill or has diarrhea I would take her back to your veterinarian.

Yes, it's very common to see the worms after giving the deworm medication. This type of deworm medication works by inhibiting the nerves in the worm. While this usually does kill the worm, they may be somewhat alive still when they are passed in the stool. The fact that the worm came out indicates that it is at-least debilitated. If this was Millie's first deworm tablet, then it's best to give another one (like drontal plus) in two weeks to make sure you get all the worms. I hope that helps.

Most puppies will stay on their normal pooping schedule unless the dewormer causes GI upset, in which case it could be anywhere from 1 hour to the next day. If there are worms in the intestines who are susceptible to the dewormer, you will likely see them passing out in the feces within 12 hours. Also keep in mind, that you may miss a low parasite burden and that not all worms are visible to the naked eye. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction. The worms in Herbie's vomit indicate he does have intestinal worms. You often don't see worms in the poop unless there is a very heavy infestation of them. The eggs are what are deposited in the feces, and those can only be seen with a microscope. Herbie needs a deworming treatment, and I recommend Panacur which you can get OTC. He will need another deworming treatment two weeks after the first to kill all the worms, and then will need one once a month until he is six months old. After that, he will need a deworming treatment every three months.

Heartworm preventative medications also kill intestinal worms such as hookworms and roundworms, so it's not uncommon to see a puppy pass some worms in the stool after getting a dose of heartworm prevention. As long as Ginger is acting normal, this shouldn't be cause for concern. She will likely finish passing the worm the next time she has a bowel movement. You can take her outside for a potty break to see if she needs to go, or gently wipe her rear end with a warm washcloth to see if the worm will come out easily.

Often you will not see the dead worms in the feces unless your pet had a very severe infection. Sometime dead worms will get digested or come out in the same color as the feces. The worms should be dead pretty soon (24 hrs) after worming.

Hi there. Short, flat worms that you can see in the stool are tapeworms. Over-the-counter dewormers will not get rid of these, so you'll need to get a prescription dewormer from your vet to treat them effectively :)
