My dog still has worms after deworming. Is another dose safe?

Hello there! If the worm wasn't moving, it was likely dead, and some worms do get excreted once they die from the dewormer instead of being resorbed into the body, especially if Skye had a lot of them. I would not give her more dewormer without the advice of a veterinarian at this point as they will likely deworm her again at her next appointment. Yes she sure can. It can take up to 1 week to rid the first round of worms in her system. Then as the worms in her system go through their 2 week life cycle (from baby worms to adult worms that you see in the poop) they should be treated again as a re-emergence of worms is seen. So the deworming schedule that I follow to ensure all worms (baby's and adults) are gone is as follows: 1) Deworm today 2) Deworm again in 3 days 3) Deworm again in 2 weeks But technically and most of the time you can get away with just doing #'s 1, and 3. Yes, it's very common to see the worms after giving the deworm medication. This type of deworm medication works by inhibiting the nerves in the worm. While this usually does kill the worm, they may be somewhat alive still when they are passed in the stool. The fact that the worm came out indicates that it is at-least debilitated. If this was Millie's first deworm tablet, then it's best to give another one (like drontal plus) in two weeks to make sure you get all the worms. I hope that helps.

Hello and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Parasite eggs are microscopic so I'm wondering if what you're seeing in the stool is actually eggs. It could be adult roundworms or even tapeworm eggs. It is not uncommon to see the adult roundworms as they are killed by the deworming process. If it is tapeworm eggs, you may need to end up treating for fleas (as this is how tapeworms are spread). The Dolpac should help treat for tapeworms and the praziquantel should be effective for giardia and roundworms. It is possible that you may end up needed to retreat but I suspect what you are seeing may be normal for the deworming process. Definitely take a fecal sample back to your veterinarian in about 3 weeks to ensure the infection is cleared. Also the prevent reinfection make sure to clean up your dogs feces from the yard. If at any time Echo seems to be acting ill or has diarrhea I would take her back to your veterinarian.

The reason is most of the time, it is needed to follow up on the initial deworming dose to be actually effective for most parasites. Good luck and have a great day!

It depends which type of worms Kia is suffering from, for tapeworms one treatment is enough, for roundworms you need to repeat the treatment 2 weeks after the first one. the reason is the treatment for roundworms does not kill the eggs.
