When can puppies regulate their own body temperature and stay warm?

Once a puppy reaches about 4 weeks of age, it should be comfortable with the same temps you are comfortable in. If it is too cold for you, it is too cold for the pup. You can monitor for lethargy, shivering and cold ears or paws also.

If you are talking about 40 degrees F°, that is definitively too cold for them as puppies cannot regulate their normal temperature for the first few weeks of life. Puppies typically nurse every 2-4 hours until 3-4 weeks old then it can be every 4-6 hours. If he has a good suckle reflex that is a good sign and he is probably hungry. You will use puppy milk replacement until he is weaned which generally starts around 4-5 weeks of age the. Transition to soft puppy food and decrease milk feedings. They do have to stay warm. Their normal body temperature is 100 so that can be a sign if shaking. You have to gently wipe their behind and probates to stimulate them to go to the bathroom. This should be done after every meal. They generally sleep a lot and as they get older and more coordinated then they stay awake longer

Great question! I would keep your puppy indoors in cold nights. Young puppies are not able to regulate their body temperature, and it would be best to keep it indoors where it is warmer. You can keep the puppy in a crate indoors to keep it from getting into things and having accidents in the home.

It would be best not to do until she is a bit older as temperature regulation in puppies is still immature and -5 may be a quite challenging temperature. During the first three weeks of life, kittens are unable to regulate their body temperature, so temperatures less than 27C can lead to hypothermia if their mother does not keep them warm. Usually by seven weeks of age, they can control their body temperature as well as an adult. Given your kittens are just over three weeks, this still may be a little bit cold for them. I would keep the temperature in their room a bit higher until they are closer to seven weeks of age. I hope this helps!

Hi, and thanks for posting this question. Ambient temperature for pups that age should be around 80 degrees, so as long as mom is with them her body heat probably keeps it around that temp.
