Puppy rash won't go away after dust exposure. What should I do?

She could be having an acute allergic reaction to something such as grass or some type of chemical on the ground. You can try washing her off using a mild cleanser such is Dawn dish soap or oatmeal-based pet shampoo. If it doesn't clear up within 8 to 12 hours then I would recommend having your veterinarian do an exam. In the meantime if you start scratching or itching at it you'll need to stop her as that could cause a secondary bacterial infection.

At her age I would be concerned she has mange (scabies) due to the itching and locations. It is hard to find and actually mite on them but very easy to treat just to be safe. Some puppies get a puppy pyoderma which is little pustules and bumps on their bellies. Most out grow this but few need antibiotics to help when it occurs. She is young to have allergies but it is not impossible. I would have your vet recheck the skin for mange and do weekly baths to help

Hello, and thank you for your question. Poor Skye. My guess is this is a severe allergic reaction as well as secondary bacterial infection of the skin. If ointments and benadryl are not helping, she will require stronger, oral medications, to control the inflammation and treat the infection. This will require a visit to the veterinarian. I would recommend this visit within the next 12-24 hours, given how uncomfortable this looks for Skye. In the meantime, you could try giving Skye a bath with a gentle aloe and oatmeal type of shampoo, just to give her some temporary relief, and hope to wash off any surface allergens that may be irritating her skin. Rinse off the shampoo thoroughly with lukewarm water afterwards, and pat dry (don't rub). I hope this helps, and your little girl is feeling better soon.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The most important part of treatment of a rash is to stop the self-trauma. I strongly recommend getting an E-collar for Bess. Once you have this on, I would clean the rash with warm water, and then dry it very well. If there is yellow/cream/green debris, or the pimples are very numerous, then antibiotics might be required. I would try the e-collar for a couple days, if it isn't looking better fairly quickly then I suggest going back to your vet to discuss if antiboitics are required. There isn't really anything that you can put on it in the mean-time to help with the itch, as steroid creams might make it worse if there is a bad infection. Once you stop the licking with the E-collar it should start to improve. Best of luck with Bess.

Hi there and thanks for posting! Sorry to hear Lolly has been diagnosed with allergies. This can be frustrating for both the pet and pet owner alike! The brown coating on the abdomen may be secondary yeast growth or discharge from a secondary bacterial infection that is present due to itching or scratching at the skin. If the medications do not seem to be helping, you may try having Lolly tested for allergies through an allergy screen. This can help differentiate between a food allergy and an environmental allergy. Food allergies are treated by avoiding the protein source Lolly is allergic to and environmental allergies can be treated with allergy medications such as antihistamines, Apoquel or Cytopoint injections (which work by targeting the inflammatory reaction of the skin), or allergy immunotherapy injections which ultimately produce the best outcome for the patient long term. It might be a very mild allergic reaction, at this point i do not think it requires treatment. if it gets worse or if she is very itchy then you will have to take her to the vet in order to get some allergy meds.
