My 6-week puppy is weak, struggling, and had pneumonia. What's wrong?

I am concerned that she is having such trouble breathing. This could be another pneumonia, an upper respiratory infection, a fungal infection, a congenital heart problem and much more. If your vet has already done X-rays and they were normal, you may want to talk to them about having an ultrasound of the heart done. Also, I would have her blood work checked to see how her liver and kidney values are and see what her white blood count looks like. Finally, I would talk to your vet about whether see needs some antibiotics and medicine to help her breathing. I hope this helps and she starts to feel better soon.

I would be concerned about purchasing the puppy with such a history, there is a possibility it may be an indication of additions issues such as swallowing difficulties, weakened immune system or other internal causes, especially if this pup is smaller than the siblings

Respiratory diseases can take quite a bit of time to resolve. If it has only been 4 days I really think you need to give her more time. I really cannot comment on those medications as I am not familiar with them; we do not use them in the U.S. Without knowing her diagnosis (respiratory disease is very vague) it is very difficult to give you any further advice. If you do not think she is improving I suggest you take her back to the vet for some x-rays of her lungs and some blood testing.

If Ebony still has a respiratory infection, it is going to be even more difficult on her body because of her narrow nostrils, which may explain the difficulty breathing. This breed will typically have a hard time when dealing with a respiratory infection because they are unable to move air through their nostrils efficiently. I would recommend taking her in to be seen by a veterinarian and have chest x-rays performed to see if there are any abnormalities that need to be addressed or more infection that requires further antibiotic therapy. Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. If your puppy is not improving after being on medications for a week or is worsening, I would schedule a recheck with your vet. Sometimes switching to a different antibiotic may help. The particular antibiotic that your puppy is on may also cause growth defects, but this is rarely seen. I typically use Clavamox or doxycycline for Respiratory bugs in puppies. Another alternative treatment your vet might consider, is initiating nebulization therapy to help relieve some of the symptoms your puppy is experiencing. I'm sorry to hear Furo is feeling so unwell. If he is so weak that he is unable to eat or walk it would be best to keep him at the vet so that he can be hospitalized and treated with IV fluids to help regain his strength while the antibiotics work. He may need more intensive care than you can provide at home, especially if his pneumonia is bad and he is unable to breathe well. If you cannot keep him hospitalized, talking with your vet to see if you can start giving subcutaneous fluids at home may help him some. Wet foods that are warmed up may also be easier to eat and can provide both nutrition and hydration for him as well.

Poor puppy. It is hard to say how best to help your puppy without knowing if there are any specific underlying problems going on here. I would recommend getting your puppy's stool tested for intestinal parasites first. If there are parasites that are taking away his nutrition, this could be the only reason for his failure to thrive. I would also recommend getting some bloodwork done on this pup to look for other clues as to why he is not recovering well. Anemia, parasites, congenital disorders, etc, could be at play here. Also lung infections are notorious for taking forever to resolve, especially if a fungal infection was present. These can take 6 months to a year in some cases. As long as your puppy is eating well and still bright and alert, then take it one day at a time. The best thing to do is to continue the medication prescribed and feed your pet a high quality puppy food, as well as checking for any other underlying problems as I mentioned above. Some good brands of food to consider are: Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Eukanuba and Purina. I hope that your puppy is able to make a full and speedy recovery soon! Best wishes and take care.
