My puppy's poop has red spots. Should I worry about a watermelon seed?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 2 days old | 12.7 lbs

Today, I noticed my puppy’s poop had red spots (not bright, not super dark). The stool was normal in shape, amount, consistency and it was chocolate brown. In that poop, she also passed a watermelon seed she might have accidentally ingested yesterday’s afternoon. Should I be worried or it could be related to the seed? She ate her breakfast this morning and played like her usual self.

The red spots may just be from something she ate causing an enteritis. Since she is otherwise acting normal and eating normally then you could continue to monitor her. If the problem continues or you notice additional clinical signs then she needs to be examined and treated by a vet.
