My puppy's poop has red spots. Should I worry about a watermelon seed?

The red steak in the picture may be blood; or I could also be convinced that it is some light red material in the poo. If your dog tends to rip up things like clothes or other non-food items, then I would inspect the poo a little closer. If it is blood, then no need to worry too much at this time. This indicates that Paxi has bleeding in her colon, rectum, or anus. This can happen due to certain infections, or trauma (this can happen if Paxi is scooting) to the anus. However, this bleeding is often transient (often goes away in a day or two) and does not need treatment right away. If she also had diarrhea, then I would be more concerned. If the stools remain a normal shape like this, and Paxi is otherwise behaving normal, then I think it's OK to wait a day or two and see if the red streaks stop. If the treat you've been giving Sis has a red outer shell on it, then that is the likely cause of the red color of her poop. As long as she is eating and drinking normally, going potty normally, and behaving normally, I'd be more inclined to think that's the cause of the burgundy color of her poop.

I am sorry to hear about Shelby! It is a bit confusing reading your description because you say watery but hard poop... if you are seeing poop that is loose with red coloration to it this is concerning especially in a puppy. It is very common to have intestinal parasites in puppies and some of these can cause blood in the stool. I would make an appointment for Shelby to see a vet and bring a stool sample along with you. In the meantime you can pick up a probiotic at the pet store or vet's office to start her on in case she does have some GI upset due to an abrupt diet change. If, however, she starts vomiting or becomes lethargic, stops eating, or develops more bloody diarrhea these can be signs of parvo virus and would be considered and emergency.

As long as Isabelle is behaving normally, you can watch her at home. Consider a 24 hour fast, allowing small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food and gradually increase the amount if no other symptoms develop. Feed bland until the stool is normal then transition slowly to her regular diet. Monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. if any of these symptoms develop, have Isabelle physically examined by your vet.
