Why is my dog panicking, barking, and peeing after steroids?

Excessive drinking and urination, as well as behavioral changes (aggression, hyperactivity and agitation can all occur) can all be attributed to steroid administration. Long acting steroids can last 2-4 weeks, depending upon which exact medication was given. As the steroid wears off, you should see these side effects resolve. Fiddle will return to his normal self again, don't worry! :-)

Poor Bentley! I'm sorry to hear that he's so uncomfortable. Steroids such as prednisone can sometimes cause weight gain, excessive panting, increased thirst, and urinary accidents in the house - so it's certainly possible that some of the issues you are seeing could be side effects from the medication. Since he isn't feeling any better after 5 days, yes - I would definitely recommend giving your vet a call or taking Bentley back tomorrow for recheck visit. It sounds like he may need a different course of treatment, or possibly some diagnostic testing to see if something else is wrong.

This is a common reaction to steroids. If the steroids were only for his itching you may try to decrease his dose in half to see if you see improvement in the side effects but still see relief in his allergies. But I would still call your vet to let them know he is having this type of reaction. If he was prescribed steroids for an auto immune disorder I would contact your vet before adjusting the dose. Yes, this is a common side effect of this medication. Temaril-P contains prednisolone, which is a steroid - this is very effective at relieving allergy-related itching as well as a variety of other conditions, but it often causes increased thirst and urination as a side effect. In some dogs, this can be severe enough to cause urinary accidents in the house. This isn't dangerous at all, but can definitely be annoying for dog owners! I would recommend calling your veterinarian in the morning to let them know that Marley is having this problem. He/she may recommend reducing her dose to decrease the chance of further accidents.

Peeing in the house, barking excessively, soft stool and drinking a lot could all be caused by stress/anxiety, for which non -prescription VetriScience daily Composure chews (available on chewy.com) may help, however a consult with your veterinarian re: Prozac (which takes 3 weeks to take effect) or an alternate anti-depressant /anti-anxiety medication or the help of a trainer may be needed. It would be safest however to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam, full screening bloodwork, a urinalysis and fecal exam to rule out parasites as the cause of the soft stool or renal disease/diabetes as the cause of the increased drinking. If the problem is truly behavioral and she has no other issues going on (I know you say she had a biopsy recently) you can explain this to your doctor and likely they will prescribe you something for anxiety-especially if she is calmed by hugging tight, etc. thunder shirts are available and many animals find them calming as well (the "shirt" fits snugly over the animal and sort of mimics a hug). Anxiolytics like trazadone often help-but so can natural medications like melatonin in my experience. Your doctor will decide which is right for your pet based on her current history and health status. I hope this helps!

In general, steroids need to be slowly decreased over time and are generally not supposed to be stopped abruptly although it is not always detrimental (it depends on the dose/length of time pets are on them). I recommend to call your veterinarian first thing tomorrow morning. They can look at the dose and decide if Diesel should be placed back on a lower dose or if it is ok to not start them again. You should also have your vet mark that he may be sensitive to steroids so they should be lowered for him if used at all. I hope this helps.
