Why does my puppy have a skin fungus or infection near his penis?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is likely a small focus of infection or pustule. Sometimes these do occur in puppies and go away on their own. Sometimes it does require antibiotics to take care of it. You can bathe him with a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine which you may get at your local pet store. You can bathe him twice weekly for 2 weeks. If it does not improve, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! Thanks for the pictures. It appears as though Sparky may have a bacterial skin infection, or puppy pyoderma. A lot of times puppy pyoderma resolves on it's own. If it gets worse than this I would recommend taking Sparky to the Vet to be evaluated and prescribed oral antibiotics. You can try to use chlorhexidine containing pads (such as the Douxo chlorhexidine 3% PS pads) to clean the are twice daily for 7 days. You may find these online or at your local pet store. You can try to use a medicated shampoo containing chlorhexidine based shampoo and bathe him twice weekly for about 1 week. If he does not get better, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Alternatively, this could be secondary to allergies. Puppies commonly get skin infections on their belly because they have a weak immune system. I would take him to the vet to get medications started. Good luck and kisses to Max!
