My puppy had parvo. How do I ensure proper growth and nutrition?

After max recovered from parvo, what should i give him to regain all minerals losted? Please give me options. does the parvo affect his maximum growth when he becomes adult?

I’m glad to hear Max has recovered! Parvo can affect the overall adult size but feeding him a proper diet will help to counteract its effects. You should feed him a large breed puppy food but do not give him any supplements. Large breed puppy foods are fortified with the proper amount of calcium, phosphorus and protein. Providing additional calcium and phosphorus can actually hurt his bone structure and cause severe growth abnormalities. Omega-3 fatty acids for dogs are fine to supplement with and this will help to decrease any inflammation in his body and also improve the coat and skin health. The foods I recommend are:

Royal Canin German Shepherd Puppy. This is my favorite diet for German Shepherd‘s as it is formulated to meet their growth needs and also takes into account their sensitive digestive systems.
Purina Pro Plan large breed puppy formula.
Nutro large breed puppy formula.
Science Diet large breed puppy formula.
Eukanuba large breed puppy formula.

It shouldn't stunt his growth as long as he gets back on a high quality puppy food. I would just get him back on a puppy food like science diet, royal canin or something similar which is high quality and has been properly researched to have all the vitamins and minerals they need. You could also put him on a general puppy multi-vitamin. You should be able to find some good options at your local Pet store or online.

The Royal Canin Giant Starter is a balanced diet on it's own. You do not need to, nor should you, feed anything else. Fruits are not good - too high in sugar. The egg and cottage cheese are probably fine but really not necessary. I understand you may be vegetarian but please understand that dogs are not and they need meat in order to survive. My recommendation is to only feed the Royal Canin. He doesn't appear to be too thin in the photos.

Hello. Sometimes when an individual starts off life in a poor way, full development can be compromised. But with good care, catch-up with littermates is possible. I think feeding the Royal Canin is a very smart move, but I am always a little concerned about adding supplements. It is just so easy to over supplement & cause more problems, especially when you are already using a nutritionally complete food. No one can guarantee that Luffy will develop totally in comparison with other GSDs, but he should be the best he can be. You also need to keep in mind that GSDs can be quite prone to hip & elbow dysplasia, & the wrong supplementation can exacerbate this condition. My puppy recovered from parvo. How do I ensure his health and growth?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am glad that Jonny has recovered! To have a healthy puppy you should continue with veterinary care and start his puppy vaccinations as outlined by your Vet. Have his stool tested for intestinal parasites and deworm him. He should be started on heartworm and flea/tick prevention and maintained on that life long. He should eat a well balanced puppy food until he is full grown. Play with his feet, ears, mouth to get him used to handling. Take his to puppy training and be sure he knows basic obedience. Play with him regularly and have an exercise routine. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bruno! He is very cute! Parvo virus doesn't normally affect bone structural growth. It can affect the heart if they contract it very very young. If Bruno contracted parvo in his first few days of life then the heart complications are possible. I can't tell from your post if he got parvo at 3 days old or 3 days ago. As for drinking milk, at 8 weeks of age Bruno can be drinking water and eating just dog food. He should be about weaned off milk products. You can syringe water gently and slowly in his mouth. If he is recovering from infection 3 days ago then you can also syringe watered down canned dog food. I hope this helps and I wish you and Bruno the best!

These diets break down easier in they system and will help to avoid shocking his system. He should eat the diet for two weeks before gradually transiting back to his normal food. You should definitely feed a puppy food. Purina Pro Plan and Iams are good foods that are a little less expensive. If your puppy still isn't gaining weight you should see a vet - parasites, food sensitivities or pancreatic diseases may be keeping him from gaining weight.
