My puppy has parvo and is passing pure blood. Can she pull through?

She will need to be on IV fluids, injectable antibiotics, and anti-nausea medication. Your veterinarian is right that she needs to eat. Dogs infected with parvovirus need intensive treatment in a veterinary hospital, where they receive antibiotics, drugs to control the vomiting, intravenous fluids, and other supportive therapies. Bloody diarrhea does happen with parvovirus infections as the virus destroys the healthy protective lining of the intestines and that causes blood to come inside the intestinal track. Protein loss and anemia can occur because of this which can cause a domino effect of problems with dogs battling Parvovirus. It is difficult to predict what the prognosis will be with Awesome, sight unseen. However, I can tell you prognosis does depend on whether the infection was diagnosed early or not, how old the dog was at the time of diagnosis, and level of treatment. Older puppies that have been diagnosed early and undergoing aggressive treatment have a much better prognosis. I hope this has helped and I wish Awesome a speedy recovery!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Berry! Parvo is a very serious disease and sadly can take much longer than 2 days to resolve. On average it takes 3-7 days and the puppies get worse before they get better. That is a lot of diarrhea. Be sure that you are keeping up with Berry's hydrational needs. Hopefully she is getting IV fluids, IV antibiotics and IV antinausea medications since she isn't holding anything down. Ideally she should be hospitalized if that is possible. If your puppy has parvo he is not likely to make it until the 18th with home treatment. Homeopathy has not been shown to help this disease. Parvo is very serious. Please get him to a vet. If you can't afford veterinary care then you should reconsider having a dog. I am sorry to be so harsh but this is the most frustrating part of this profession for veterinary professionals. The puppy should not made to suffer. I understand that people have financial constraints but having a puppy/dog is not an inexpensive endeavor. At this point he may be starting to break with parvo but since he is still eating and drinking he may just have intestinal parasites (worms) causing the bloody diarrhea. General dewormers often don't treat the parasites that cause bloody stools; a prescription product is needed once a fecal test determines what parasites are present. Either way, he needs to be seen by a vet. If he doesn't have parvo then you need to be sure to get him his vaccinations at the appropriate intervals so that he gets protected. You can get low cost vaccines at the local Humane Society or at your local VETCO clinic if there is a Petco near you. It could be parvo but it could also be other things. you need to take him urgently to the vet for him to get hospitalized and treated, if it is parvo his chances are not good at his age but if it is something else he could survive if he receives the correct treatment.

I am so sorry to hear about Darcy! This type of illness is so frustrating and I see it occasionally in my emergency practice. It could still be parvo, although false negatives are rare. It could be a toxin, anaphylactoid reaction, a parasite, HGE (hemorrhagic gastroenteritis), pancreatitis, a foreign body obstruction, or something else. The main thing with all of these is supportive care, so the iv fluids and are crucial. Certainly you are entitled (and even encouraged) to seek out a specialty center for a second opinion if Darcy is safe to transfer.
