My puppy was exposed to parvo, only one shot. Is he at risk?

I would not recommend to get the puppy who did not get Parvo. It’s possible that he may still break with this highly contagious virus. For the puppy that survived Parvo, he will likely be fine. Long term, most dogs experience no organ damage or side effects. This puppy is still shedding the Parvo virus and will continue to shed the virus for 6 months in it’s feces. The virus will live for roughly 1 year in the soil. That means you cannot take this puppy out in public where it may expose other puppies who are not vaccinated for at least 6 months. That also means your yard will be contaminated for at least 1.5 years minimum so you cannot have any dogs over to play who are not fully vaccinated or else they run the risk of contracting the virus. You don’t want to harm any other pets. He also cannot play with any dogs who are not fully vaccinated for 6 months. The vaccine is highly effective and it’s unlikely that a fully vaccinated pet will get sick (but keep in mind nothing is a 100% guarantee). If Rocky is vaccinated for parvo, he will be safe. If he's not vaccinated, the answer to your question depends on how long ago this dog had parvo. Dogs with parvo can shed the virus for at least two weeks after exposure.

Hello. I think that Stewie has little risk of becoming ill from contact with this puppy. Adult dogs, especially those that have been vaccinated, usually have good immunity against Parvovirus. The fact that his vaccine “expired” 6 weeks ago is not as critical as you may think. It is likely that he still has adequate protection against the virus. Certainly you will want to monitor him for anotexia, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea, but I really think he will be just fine. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

Luckily the parvoviris part of the vaccinations works well from the first dose. I know you are really worried but I think little Charlie will be absoloutely fine. Keep a close eye on him and if you notice any loose faeces go to the vet at this point. Parvo thankfully is quite rare nowadays because so many pets are vaccinated.

The risk is probably pretty low, but Lucy may not have full immunity for a couple of weeks after this last vaccine was administered. We booster this vaccine frequently to hopefully catch a dog during the window where antibody leftover from mom is declining and the puppy can make it's own immune response - this may have already happened, or she may be in the process of mounting this immune response now. If Lucy seems nauseous, if she is vomiting, or if her appetite is decreased I'd recommend seeing your vet right away.

In theory, she has not mount a response to her vaccines yet so she can still get infected with like parvovirus if those feces were infected with parvovirus. However, the likelihood of Luna developing parvovirus just from being walked in a heavily trafficked area is low unless she directly had contact with feces from an infected dog. I would not be too concerned at this time. Just work with your primary care veterinarian in starting her on a vaccination protocol and avoid contact with other dogs with an unknown vaccination status until she is fully vaccinated. I will tell you what to look for in terms of parvovirus symptoms though again it is unlikely that she has parvovirus. Symptoms usually include lethargy, vomiting and/or diarrhea. Contact your veterinarian to get her set up to start a vaccination program soon. I think she will be fine. Nothing like getting a new pup! I bet she is adorable! Good luck!
