My puppy's panting a lot and heart is racing. Is she okay?

I would recommend that you have Bella examined by a vet as soon as possible. Open mouth breathing in a dog that is in a cool, comfortable environment can be caused by heart disease, lung disease, anemia, severe pain, among a few others. Rapid heart rate can also be caused by these things. When you get to the vet, they will do a physical exam and may recommend x-rays to make a diagnosis.

I agree that this is a pretty rapid respiratory rate for Daisy, particularly if she's resting while breathing this quickly. As you mentioned, it's very possible that this fast breathing is due to post-operative pain. However, if she's currently receiving pain medication after surgery, it's a bit less likely. Other causes of rapid breathing can include stress or anxiety, blood clots in the lungs, heart disease, pneumonia, among others. Regardless, it would be best to take Daisy to the vet urgently for evaluation. If the vet suspects pain as the cause, they will be able to prescribe additional pain medications. Otherwise, they will be able to perform any necessary diagnostic testing, which may include chest x-rays or blood clotting times to try to get to the bottom of this issue. If only Jessie could talk! This type of behavior could be related to something like anxiety or to pain/discomfort. I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian who will check for evidence of pain on the physical exam. They may also check a urine sample or the anal glands as well. Vaccinations often make the puppy tired, as the body is busy making antibodies. I's say, monitor her for vomiting, diarrhea, breathing problems, and if they appear or the panting appears to be turning into a breathing problem, or if she appears ill, then take her back to the vet for a recheck.

No, it would be very unlikely for Daisy to have more puppies two days after giving birth, and if there were more puppies, they would probably be dead. What probably is causing the panting is her uterus contracting. When the puppies nurse, they stimulate her uterus to contract, leading her to pant. This is a normal postpartum behavior, and it should pass over time.

If they are resting quietly inside in the cool/shade, they should not be panting unless they were running around. If they are outside or in a hot room/house then it may be normal. If you are worried about them you should have them checked by a vet.
