My puppy has an oozing rash. What could it be and how can I help?

She could be having an acute allergic reaction to something such as grass or some type of chemical on the ground. You can try washing her off using a mild cleanser such is Dawn dish soap or oatmeal-based pet shampoo. If it doesn't clear up within 8 to 12 hours then I would recommend having your veterinarian do an exam. In the meantime if you start scratching or itching at it you'll need to stop her as that could cause a secondary bacterial infection.

The only way to get rid of it is to know what is causing it. This itching could be caused by fleas, mites, allergies, or ringworm. I'd take Ellie into the vet first thing in the morning. The vet can diagnose what is causing this rash, and can prescribe medication to treat it. Best of luck.

If all of those came back negative, the next step is to treat the allergy symptomatically and try to discover the cause of the allergy. Three main type of allergies are usually affecting pets: food allergies, flea and parasite related ones and environmental type (allergens coming from trees, pollens, dust etc etc). Some medications can be given by the vet in order to repair any possible skin lesions (like steroids and antibiotics). Oatmeal shampoo can provide some temporary relief so it can be used. At her age I would be concerned she has mange (scabies) due to the itching and locations. It is hard to find and actually mite on them but very easy to treat just to be safe. Some puppies get a puppy pyoderma which is little pustules and bumps on their bellies. Most out grow this but few need antibiotics to help when it occurs. She is young to have allergies but it is not impossible. I would have your vet recheck the skin for mange and do weekly baths to help

Congrats on your new puppy, but I'm sorry Birdie has a rash. It could be puppy pyoderma based on the appearance of her skin in the pictures and the location of the rash. A puppy's skin is very sensitive, and this is especially true in areas where there is lack of protective covering of hair. Puppy pyoderma is a bacterial skin infection. Treating it requires a course of antibiotics which you do need to see the vet for to get a prescription. I would recommend having her seen by the vet sooner than May 1st for this problem, and I would call the vet in the morning to see if you can get her in sometime this week. Those spots on Maybelle could be several things including allergies, skin mites, flea bites, ringworm (which humans can get) or a bacterial infection. You can try adding in an omega 3 fatty acid supplement for dogs, this can help improve the skin health. You may also try changing her diet to something like Royal Canin or Nutro as they are aimed at skin health. You can wash the lesions with soap once a day and rinse well (don't wash her whole body, just those spots). Protect the areas from licking or scratching. If they don't start looking better within about a week or if they get worse, have her examined by the veterinarian who may prescribe medications.
