My 1-month-old puppy isn't listening or bonding. Is this normal?

I recently raised a litter of puppies from a dog I adopted, & at about the same age, 1 of the puppies became very shy & scared. If you picked her up, she would sometimes scream like she was being murdered. With extra attention, over the next 4 weeks, she became much calmer & less anxious. She was never as assured as her litter mates, and all I can hope is she continues to mature & do well. All animals have different personalities, & at this young age, you cannot say how one will turn out. Give him as much of your attention as possible, & when it comes time to place him ( if you decide to ), it might be best to find someone with some experience raising dogs ( not a first-time dog owner ), & is possibly willing to put a little extra time in to train & socialize this pup. HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Snow is very very cute!! 5 weeks is very young. In the US we do not recommend puppies be removed from their mothers that young. Snow is to young to learn commands and come when called. I promise you with time and as he grows he will learn his name and come. Just practice a few times per day for only a few minutes. Puppies tire easily. It is very common at 5 weeks to appear deaf and like they can't see. It is just immaturity! I hope this helps and have fun with your new puppy!

At two months your puppy is still a very young baby, comparable more to a 1 1/2 year old child. He will not be able to concentrate for long. Best make sure he has all his vaccinations and once that is done book a puppy kinder garden or school with him. Until then, just teach him the word "no" for things he should not do. That is plenty to learn for such a small baby.

All of this behavior you are describing is completely normal for a young puppy. Jack has a lot of new surroundings to get used to and that will take time. He should start to learn his name in about 2-3 weeks. It will probably take about that long for him to get used to being in the crate at night as well. Remember, he has been used to being with his mom and litter mates up until this point so he is not accustomed to being alone. Even though he is still very young, now is a great time to start some basic training commands with him. This will help better cement your relationship and help him understand that you are the one in charge. Use lots of treats to reward him when he does what you ask. To help him learn his name more quickly, give him a treat every time he looks your way when you say his name and try to avoid yelling his name when he is being scolded (for example instead of saying 'Jack, no!', just say 'No!'). Pilot sounds like your average, rambunctious and mischievous puppy dog. All of what you are describing are perfectly normal puppy behaviors. With proper training, enrichment, and patience on your part, Pilot should become a well-adjusted adult dog in time. Beginning obedience class at this early of an age might be a little frustrating, but I still think it is a great idea as long as the trainer is patient as well. The dog trainer should be able to provide you with many training techniques and ideas on how to make your dog most suitable for your own situation. Good luck!!

Yes. It can be traumatic for young puppies to leave their mom, litter mates, and previous home that they knew. He needs to develop a new bond with you and learn a new home/environment/routine to gain confidence. Keep working with him and with time and becoming older he will learn. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! At 14 weeks old, she doesn’t understand commands or her name. I recommend keep working with her but use things like clapping, slapping your leg, jumping up and down to get her attention to come to you. When she does, give her a lot of praise and make It fun. Over the next few months, you can add her name and command words, like “come”, but it will take time for her to understand. I recommend using a leash during training so you can get her attention and so she can follow you and understand what you are asking her. Good luck and kisses to Princess!
