My puppy won't eat, is skinny, and lethargic. When should I see a vet?

Poor Kuttush! I worry he may have something else going on like a viral infection, upset tummy from eating something he shouldn't, or even intestinal parasites. You can try to entice him to eat by offering some plain boiled boneless, skinless chicken and white rice to see if this helps. Since he is so young and small, if he isn't improving soon I would have your vet take a look at him. Your vet will be able to figure out the cause and get him started on the right meds before he becomes too dehydrated. I hope this helps!

There are many things that can cause dogs to lose weight, not eat or drink, and not want to move, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine him and run some tests. He may have an infectious disease such as parvo, a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, or may have ingested something toxic. This does sound quite serious, so I would recommend taking Boy to the vet for an exam as soon as possible. He/she can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

If Piper has not eaten in seven days and is acting lethargic, this is definitely not normal - she needs to see a veterinarian as soon as possible, as this sounds like a potentially life-threatening problem. I would recommend taking her to an emergency clinic tonight to be seen. The veterinarian there can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and see what kind of treatment is needed. If you're not sure where to take her, try calling your regular vet's office - their voicemail message should have contact information for your nearest ER or an on-call doctor for emergencies.

Seeing that your puppy is quite young, it is possible that he is dealing with some infectious disease such as Parvo or Distemper. It sounds as Kong is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking him to the vet the first chance you get, he will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection he will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better.

He should not be this thin. I would be very worried about some underlying disease condition that is preventing him from either being able to eat the food, or from being able to absorb the food. Possible causes are GI parasites (worms, giardia, coccidia, etc.), exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), other GI absorbtive disorders (IBD, GI lymphoma, etc.), partial obstruction or foreign object in the gut, persistent right aortic arch or hiatal hernia causing vomiting/regurgitation, food allergies, etc. I would try feeding him boiled rice with boiled/boneless/skinless chicken breasts, as well as a high quality canned puppy food. I would also strongly recommend getting him to a vet where I would discuss a fecal test, a deworming trial, x-rays or preferably ultrasound, testing for EPI depending on the quality of his feces, and x-rays of the chest to look for congenital malforations there.
