New puppy not eating, drinking, or peeing after neuter. Is he okay?

It is not unusual for dogs to not have interest in food and water that first night after anesthesia and surgery. However, if you have concerns that something isn’t right then it is always safest to have her examined by a veterinarian. Your veterinarian may have an emergency number or they may refer to a local emergency center. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon.

This could just be related to his significant anxiety, or it could be early signs of illness, especially parvo virus if he hasn’t been fully vaccinated. You can try offering a bland diet of chicken breast and cooked white rice to encourage him to eat (you can add a little extra broth for hydration). But if he isn’t doing better tomorrow, he needs to see a vet to determine if there is a medical cause for the change.

He should be rechecked by your vet or at the local veterinary ER today. He may be painful or still feeling the aftereffects of general anesthesia. This can last as long as 72 hours. If his bladder is full, the doctors can insert a urinary catheter if necessary to empty it. Medications can be administered or dispensed to alleviate pain which may make him comfortable. Supportive care can also be administered. SQ fluids may rehydrate him and perk him up.

I wouldn't be too worried just yet. This can happen with puppies and doesn't necessarily mean anything at this point in time. Keep an eye on him today and tonight and if he hasn't pooped or peed by tomorrow morning, then I would be worried. At that point, I would take him into the vet. Make sure he keeps eating and drinking. If he becomes very lethargic, starts vomiting, or stops eating or drinking before tomorrow morning, then I would rush him into a vet immediately. Noodle might be sick. By this point, he should be completely recovered from the neuter. I recommend to ave him examined today if possible. It would be highly unusual for a kitten to have urinary complications after neutering. You are a good pet parent for monitoring him, but as long as he is interacting with you, interested in food, and is doing normal cat behaviors such as grooming I wouldn’t worry yet. If he’s repeatedly getting into and out of the litter box without producing anything, if he starts vocalizing in the box, or if there is bloody discharge from the surgical area take him right in.

I would give the vet a call before stopping the pain medication, and let them know that he has stopped eating or drinking. This isn't normal behavior a day after surgery, and the vet should know about this.
