My fearful rescue puppy isn't drinking or peeing. Is he sick?

If she seems fine otherwise with a good activity level, I recommend you try a highly palatable diet such as the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends or potentially consider adding pieces of boiled chicken or dog grade gravy to make her current diet more palatable. This is likely going to work for you. If at some point, she appears to not be doing well, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Good luck!

Moving into a new home is stressful especially after a surgery. Keep an eye on him tonight and if he's still not eating and drinking the morning, then I would be concerned and have him seen by a vet.

If by tomorrow he still isn't drinking you can try giving him ice cubes or adding a small amount of low sodium chicken broth to the water. Most likely, as long as he is healthy, he will drink when he is thirsty. A tiny 4 lb poodle doesn't need very much water. If his urine is dark and has a strong odor that means it is concentrated, which worries me less than a very dilute urine as long as he is acting alright. If he starts acting lethargic, is not eating or drinking, then I recommend you call your veterinarian tomorrow. Hopefully, Luke just needs a little more time to adjust.

Unfortunately, this is not normal behavior for a young puppy and is pretty concerning. At less than two months old, your puppy needs to eat regularly or he risks having low blood sugar, which can cause serious health problems. Vomiting is not typically caused by stress and all these signs make me worry about a more serious illness. Please have him seen by a veterinarian right away because his lack of appetite and vomiting are very serious.

Poor pup! It definitely sounds like something is wrong. There are many things that can cause dogs to lose weight, not eat or drink, and not want to move, so it's hard to say what might be wrong without being able to examine him and run some tests. He may have an infectious disease such as parvo, a systemic illness like liver or kidney disease, or may have ingested something toxic. This does sound quite serious, so I would recommend taking Boy to the vet for an exam as soon as possible. He/she can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

It sounds like your puppy is extremely sick, and parvovirus can take a few weeks for a dog to fully recover. It's very concerning he is not drinking as dehydration is the number one cause of death in these animals. He should see a vet again immediately, please take him into one now. Best of luck.

I am so sorry to hear about your puppy! With these symptoms I would recommend finding a vet in the area to examine her. I would be concerned she could have a urinary tract infection or be suffering from constipation. If you have any canned pumpkin you can give her a teaspoon or two added to her food to try to help if it is constipation, but it sounds like she needs to see the vet for an exam!
