My 4-month-old puppy won't eat food or treats, but is playful.

My 4 month old puppy doesn't wanna eat. I tried to give her some of her treats but she didn't also eat it. But she seems playful all the time.

If Chuchi is acting normally and isn't vomiting for having diarrhea I would try to add warm water to her food or 1 tablespoon of canned food mixed with water on her food. Sometimes dogs hold out for something better or tastier to come along, but most healthy dogs won't choose starvation. Try a few things then set a schedule for eating. Feed her in a quiet room, give her an hour of quiet time to eat then remove the food until the next meal.

You didn't indicate how long she hasn't been eating. If it has been more than 2 days I would have her seen by a Vet to be sure nothing medical is going on.

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Sorry to hear Chuchi isn't feeling well! I am quite worried whenever a pup her age doesn't want to eat for more than 24 hours, and this is definitely a reason to go immediately to the vet. Lethargy and inappetance are pretty nonspecific symptoms so it's impossible to suggest what might be wrong, but it is never normal for a young pup like her to stop eating and act lethargic. She could have intestinal parasites, a GI infection such as parvovirus, anemia, or any number of other issues. Based on their exam findings, your vet may suggest bloodwork, a fecal test, or x-rays to determine what's wrong and start the appropriate treatment. At the very least, Chuchi will likely need fluid therapy to make sure she's not getting dehydrated. I hope this helps and she feels better soon!

It sounds like you are doing a great job with Luna so far! I would first make sure that she has pooped today. If she has not this can lead to an ‘overfull’ feeling and make her not want to eat. If she has pooped and is still refusing food for more than 24 hours then I would recommend taking her in to be examined by your veterinarian to ensure nothing is wrong. I hope this helps. Why is my 7-month puppy picky, won't eat, and throws up bile?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is very abnormal for a 7month old puppy to vomit that much. I recommend taking her to the vet with a fresh stool sample to rule out intestinal parasites first. She may also need X-rays to rule out an obstruction. I would stop feeding her the human foods as she is likely to hold out for those vs eating her puppy food diet. You can try adding canned puppy food to her dry food to get her more intested. As long as there are no health concerns she will eat when she's hungry. Right now, you are caving to her before she caves and eats and is therefore promoting a picky behavior. If she's healthy, I would get tough about what you offer her. She won't starve. Good luck and kisses to Daisy!

My dog won't eat, has diarrhea, and ear pain. What should I do?

Poor Chula! It sounds like she is not feeling terrible. Any pet who is not eating beyond 48 hours needs to see the veterinarian. Just like people, there are many conditions that can make pets feel sick. This could range from bacterial over growth to intestinal blockage. Also like us, diseases are best addressed early and this may result in a better prognosis. I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian today. The doctor will need to learn the underlying cause in order to give appropriate treatment. Bring in a stool sample in case the doctor needs to test it. I hope Chula starts feeling better quickly! My puppy suddenly stopped eating his favorite food. What should I do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If Norik is acting fine and this is the only meal he skipped then I would still try to offer him food in the middle of the day. You can try adding water to the food or a teaspoon of canned food. Dogs rarely will starve themselves. Don't stress and just offer more food later! If you have to go to work then put a small amount with him or offer food at his next normal feeding time. I hope this helps and good luck!

My 2-year-old shih-poo won't eat her food. Can I give her baby food?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sure, you can use baby food mixed into kibbles if you like. But the real question is why won’t Luna eat the dry food? Possibilities include: 1) A bad tooth or other mouth problem 2) An organ dysfunction, disease, or infection that affects appetite 3) She has you well trained. I recommend seeing your vet to help rule out medical causes. If nothing is found, it could simply be that she has you well trained and knows that if she waits long enough, you’ll put something good in her bowl. My advice for that is to wait her out. Don’t give in and within 3 days, every healthy dog I know has eaten plain kibbles. Of course if Luna is a healthy weight and you don’t mind pampering her, that’s fine too, so long as she does get some dog food (it has all the minerals and vitamins we need her to get).
