My new dog isn't eating, but is drinking and alert. Is this normal?

If she seems fine otherwise with a good activity level, I recommend you try a highly palatable diet such as the Purina Pro Plan shredded blends or potentially consider adding pieces of boiled chicken or dog grade gravy to make her current diet more palatable. This is likely going to work for you. If at some point, she appears to not be doing well, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. Good luck!

However, it does not typically last more than a few days. If it has been longer already, I would encourage you to check in with your veterinarian again so that they can reevaluate Lupin to ensure that nothing has changed. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! In my experience, this process can take up to 1 week. However, while decreased appetite is common, it usually does not last that long. If this appears to last longer than 3 days, I would recommend that you have her evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Make sure that she is drinking water at least as if not, she could become dehydrated. If not drinking water, have her evaluated sooner. Good luck and have a great day!

In terms of the appetite, this is sometimes not uncommon in puppies when they are in their new environment. I recommend that you continue to monitor him for now, especially if you just got him. If these symptoms of not eating well and sleeping a large portion of the day do not improve, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. For example, you may add low sodium chicken broth, veterinary approved gravy which you can get at your pet store or pieces of boiled chicken to it. Good luck!

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sometimes eating and drinking behavior can change due to underlying dental disease or another health issue. I would recommend Maggie get checked out with her veterinarian soon. Your veterinarian will do an exam along with a oral exam and may recommend blood work and/or a dental cleaning. If all is normal, then perhaps Maggie may be particular with her food. I would choose a good quality food for her such as Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Solid Gold, Royal Canin, Hill's, Acana, or Orijen just to name a few. Try not to change the food frequently as this may encourage her to be finicky. She will eat when she's hungry enough! But first, I would be sure to have her seen by her vet just to make sure there is nothing else going on that may cause eating/drinking changes. I hope this helps and thanks again for posting!

However, it is very likely that she will normalize soon perhaps in a few days. One thing you can do is entice her appetite by adding things like pieces of chicken or beef to her food for a few days just to encourage her to eat. If there is no improvement in the next few days then have her examined by your veterinarian to ensure there is not a medical reason to explain this. Good luck!
