My puppy isn't drinking water. How can I prevent dehydration?

If the soft food is very wet he doesn't need to drink much water. You can put some water on your finger by the bowl to get him started or have a little bit of milk in the water so it tastes better. I also assume that the age you put on here is incorrect since it says that Louis is already 1 years old. A puppy is considered to be under 1 year. You can simply place water from the faucet into a regular dog bowl and offer it to him. He should drink readily and know what to do from there. If he doesn't seem interested at first, you can place a few drops on your finger and offer it to his lips for him to lick off. Do this a few times and he should begin to drink on his own. You can also give him canned puppy food in the beginning, just in case he doesn't drink an adequate amount of water initially, and this can help supplement his water intake. I hope this helps! The bag of dog food you bought should say how much dog food to feed per day. Split that amount into 3 meals. Dogs will drink when they are thirsty, they don’t dehydrate if they are healthy. If you are feeding canned dog food there is excess water in it so dogs drink less. I wouldn’t force water as Pepper will drink when it’s necessary. Kisses to Pepper!

You can try giving Max canned food (it has a high moisture content), or you can add water to his dry food to get him to drink. I'd also get him a dog water fountain. It will provide a continual source of fresh water, and may encourage him to drink. I hope this helps!

It could be that the amount of water that he is drinking is appropriate for his weight and age, without any other clinical signs I would not worry too much. Just make sure that you change his water regularly so that it is always fresh. If you are really worried, you could add plain lukewarm water to his biscuits, leave them to soak 5 minutes and the offer.

No need to apologize! Thank you for posting more information :-) It's certainly interesting that he won't drink from the bowl of cool water or out of a training water bottle. As I'm sure you know, it's very important that your puppy drinks water for hydration and his health. It could be that he's drinking water when you aren't looking, and you can measure how much water you put in the bowl in the morning. The next morning, measure the water left so that you can see if he has been drinking water or not. He may not like the temperature of the water, as dogs can be more sensitive to temperatures than humans, so you can try to leave out room temperature water to see if he will drink that. He may not like the bowl, it could be too high for him to drink out of, so you can try a more shallow bowl. You could consider getting a water fountain for him. I have one of those for my dogs and cats, and they love it. Finally, you can mix in some wet puppy food with his dry food, which will get more moisture into his diet, or you can soak his dry food with warm water. If the methods I suggested above do not get him to drink water, or the water measurements you take show he isn't drinking water, then I would have him seen by a vet for a health check.

This depends on a lot of factors including if she is otherwise exhibiting any symptoms of sickness, if she is eating canned food which already has water in it, how much water she is actually having, among other things. If she is not drinking anything especially if having other symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, loss of appetite and/or lethargy, she should be evaluated as soon as possible to prevent dehydration and to investigate the cause. If she is otherwise doing well and is eating canned food, it would be ok to monitor her for another 12-24 hours and if not improved to have her evaluated by a veterinarian then. Hopefully she returns to normal and there is no need for a veterinary visit. Have a great day!
