Is it okay if I don't leave water out for my puppy overnight?

Dogs like humans rely on thirst and usually will drink when thirsty so I would not worry about this too much. If he eats a wet food, that may be another reason why he does not drink as much water. As long as she has plenty of access to water before going into the crate, in the middle of the day & in the evening, & the temperature is consistently comfortable, she will be fine. Take care.

Yes, it's fine to take Jack's water away at night but be sure to take him out to potty right before bed and you will probably need to take him out at least once in the middle of the night. First thing in the morning when he wakes up, offer him water. I hope this helps!

I'm going to give you a link with details on how to crate train a puppy, but I do not recommend leaving food and water in his crate overnight. This will make him have to go out to the bathroom more overnight, and since you will have to get up twice to take Cooper to potty every 2.5 to 3 hours, you don't want to have to deal with additional times to take him out or messes to clean up. If he's sleeping fine in the crate, you can start closing the door. Congrats on your new puppy! Take Maximus's water away 2-3 hours before bedtime, and have him go potty right before he goes to sleep. When he is fully house trained when he is older, you can leave water out all night. Best of luck.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I find that dogs will drink what they need. If you feed him canned food that has more water and moisture in it thus they drink less water. In warmer weather and with exercise I bet that Toby will drink more to compensate. Always having fresh waster available will allow him to drink when he is ready and needs to. You can add water gradually to his dry food to trick him in to taking in more water. If you find that this doesn't work and he doesn't drink when hot and over heats then I would have your Vet do an exam. Here are a few other tips! You can try different types of bowels and have multiple down, raise the water bowl up since he is a big dog, make sure the bowls are clean, add ice cubes to the water, purchase a water fountain, add low sodium chicken broth or bone broth to the water.
