Should I worry if my puppy has nasal drip, congestion, and diarrhea?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Beagle | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 9 days old | 22 lbs

My puppy is dripping clear fluid all of a sudden tonight. It sounds like he is congested when he breaths. Especially when he takes deep breathes But not every time he is regularly breathing. He also had runny diarrhea today but he did eat ten bones on Thursday, When I wasn’t watching. I figured it caught up to him today. Should I be concerned? He seemed normal all day. Active. Had no problems eating or drinking water. I just don’t like how he sounded tonight before bed.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like he could be a bit congested as you suggested. This would be unlikely to be due to the bones he ingested those his diarrhea most likely is. Since he is otherwise doing well, you can continue to monitor him. If at some point his breathing worsens or he starts showing signs consistent with a gastrointestinal obstruction, such as vomiting, inappetence or abdominal pain, have him evaluated. Also, if his diarrhea does not improve in a day or so, have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. He is adorable! Good luck and have a good night!

It is normal to have an occasional drip of clear fluid from the nose, similar to humans having an occasional drip. However, if it is happening a lot and he sounds congested then I worry he could be developing an upper respiratory infection. As far as the diarrhea is concerned I will usually fast 1 meal, and then feed small amounts of a bland diet (such as boiled chicken and rice) for several days until the stool is back to normal. If the diarrhea doesn’t resolve quickly or if the nasal congestion continues then I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.
