Do puppies need multivitamins, or is their regular food sufficient?

If you feed a good quality puppy food, you shouldn't need to supplement with additional vitamins. Any excess will typically be excreted in the urine. If you feed a homemade diet, vitamin supplementation is recommended. Review the ingredients with your vet to confirm proper dosing.

Usually there is no need to supplement vitamins if your puppy is fed with a balanced and complete diet. I normally see in practice more problems due to incorrect vitamin supplementation than hypovitaminosis. I'm not familiar with either brand. I typically don't recommend vitamins for puppies, or any dog, for that matter, mainly because commercial dog foods are balanced diets that don't require supplementation. Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of fish oils are often a good supplement, however. Good brands are Welactin and 3-V caps.

Truth be told, no pet needs multivitamins if they are on a high quality dog food. Because unlike people, pets eat a well balanced diet day in and day out; therefore supplementation without any underlying deficiency present, will lead to over-supplementation and possible negative effects. I would refrain from giving your pet any vitamins or vitamin b complex unless he has a detected iron deficiency anemia or other known deficiency that has been verified by your veterinarian. It is not recommended to give vitamins and supplements to a puppy. Lilo should only be getting a puppy formulated dog food, which will provide her with all the supplements and vitamins she needs to grow properly. Giving her too many can cause toxicity as well as adversely affect her growth. I hope this helps!

It isn't recommended to give a multivitamin to a dog when they are already on a completed and balanced diet. Your dog will be getting all the nutrients they need to be healthy (keep in mind you feed twice a day, so there is a continuous supply of vitamins and minerals), and too many can have toxic effects. I wouldn't give your dog a multivitamin unless specifically prescribed by a vet due to a nutritional deficiency.
