My puppy lost a tooth, now has swollen gums. What should I do?

It is probably a good thing that that the tooth fell out as there was likely infection that loosened it and that was painful. If the swelling goes back and she has no pain, then you do not need to take her to a vet, However, check the other teeth as well. If there is tartar, or if the gums are red, you should have her mouth checked by the vet as she may need a dental cleaning.

Yes! I would take him to the vet for an exam. The swelling you are seeing is due to infection. Over time the infection will loosen the dental ligaments and the teeth will fall out. This is a painful condition and should be addressed with a dental cleaning, some antibiotics and maybe a long term antimicrobial rinse for the mouth that you can do at home. Hello! If the baby canine tooth came all the way out and the piece of tooth coming out is his new adult tooth- then no worries! If the baby tooth is broken and partially inside the gums, then I would recommend a vet check. Unfortunately, broken baby teeth are a known risk factor for puppies getting tetanus because of all the crazy things they put in their mouths. In this case, we recommend extracting the remaining piece of tooth to prevent this. If you were planning on having him neutered, you may be able to schedule the tooth removal and neutering during the same anesthetic event. I hope this is helpful. I would not be too concerned about the tooth at this time. It is difficult to tell from the picture, but the tooth in question looks as if it is a baby tooth that has broken off. If this is the case, the tooth will fall out sometime between 12-16 weeks of age. If this is an adult tooth, then I would recommend you continue to monitor it for now. If the tooth is still looking abnormal at the time of your dog’s spay (around 6 months of age) then your vet can remove it while she is already under anesthesia. It should resolve with the treatment described. If not, recheck with your veterinarian. If it is an abscess, it may need to be lanced and drained. You should also confirm the entire tooth and roots has been removed. A bit of tooth root left behind may cause infection.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. He may experience mild bleeding from the gum and the gum may become swollen and sore for up to 24hrs. You can give him soft food for a day or two as picking up dry kibbles may cause some discomfort. In general, dogs tolerate losing teeth very well, so I do not think there is much to worry about.

I do recommend to make an appointment with your veterinarian. Take the tooth in with you as well. Chihuahuas are a breed that is prone to dental disease. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.
